CD Box: Possible to sub 3-pin for 6-pin?
The 6-pin CD box in my 77 911 (with 78 3.0L) fried and I have a 3-pin handy. is it possible to substitute the 3-pin without damage?
|
I don't know for sure but I bet you could. The only reason I say that is because I bought a turbo motor that was supposed to have an 8 pin box but it came with a small CDI box hacked to the harness. Of course I don't know if it ran with the small box but the seller said it did.
If I were you I would put an MSD box in it. |
NOPE!!!
The 3-pin box is triggered by a high-level 12 Volt signal switched by the points, and the 6-pin box is triggered by a very low-level signal from the magnetic pickup coil in the pointless distributors! |
Dude, you already asked me, and I told you no...

Wanna sell the 3 pin? I'm looking for a spare...Warren, Wayne it should work in my car, right? They are rebuildable?
|
What are the 3-pins worth? I'll be getting rid of mine when my MSD arrives in a couple weeks.
|
That was going to be my next question...I have no idea.
|
50-80 bucks
|
Yes, Paul, it would work in your car ... and, yes, they are indeed rebuildable!
Once upon a time ... I used to say that everything but the transformer could be replaced, but, in reality ... even a bad one could be rewound with new magnet wire!!! Anybody out there that has any CDI units of any flavor, used, dead, flakey, etc ... that needs/wants to get rid of them can email or PM me ... |
I got the used three-pin for $250 Canadian. A new 6-pin is $590 from the parts place up here, so I'm going to return the 3-pin to him for credit since he doesn't have a used 6-pin.
Any of my Canadian brethren have a 6-pin for me or know where I can get one quickly north of the border? Please? And, yeah, Wayne...I appreciated you input, but I had already posted this query before you and I e-mailed. Thanks again. ("Dude? Dude!") |
Hey Warren, I asked first! ;) Seriously, I think it's time that I carry a spare CD box, coil, & voltage regulator...just never got around to getting them until now. Too cheap, I guess. My plan is to try to find stock factory replacements, so it would be relatively simple to install them roadside. I guess it's time to start cruising swap meets, even if they are far from me...
