3rd brake light installation

Hi guys,

I followed the steps on the DYI 3rd brake light installation and wanted to share the results! So far it works great and I feel a lot safer.

I ended up using the following LED Third Brake Light Strip:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MH52CMY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7G.KDbBMNMJP4

The strip was 36 inches long, so I ended cutting it down to 32 inches. I ran the wires along the left of the car, underneath the rubber on the window. No cables can be seen.

Pics below:

That is a pretty cool unit. Let us know how well it holds up over time.

That looks really cool (and cheap!). What about that black block in the wiring, were you able to tuck that away too? And you just used the double-sided tape to fasten the light?

Thanks!

Mark

Mounting a third brake light is probably a necessity these days if you’re driving in city traffic. Looks great!

The black box in the wiring ends up in the engine compartment. You can achieve this by cutting the wire and passing it through the hole on the left side of the window and then reconnecting the wire. yes, just used the double sided tape that came with the strip.

Viczeva, did you have to remove your back deck to get the wire into the engine room?

And how did you cut down the light strip? Did you just cut it or is there something more that you need to do?

It would be great to see a picture in the daylight to see details of the installation. I'm not clear on how the wire get's to the engine compartment if the lights are mounted on the outside.

No. There should be a small hole on the driver side of the rear window. It helped to put a flashlight on the inside of the car pointing at the lower corner. you should be able to see the light shine through when you open the engine deck.

I just cut the plastic casing with a razor (extremely easy), and then with folded the exposed LED strip into the plastic casing. The back of the plastic casing is black, so the LED does not shine through. Very simple process.

When its turned off you cant tell its there. Now, i haven't taken her out on a clear sunny day yet, so it might show a lot more in direct sunlight.

Great Job! Hopefully you'll wake people up from their cell phone induced zombie state while driving.
