H4 Installation Problem

Hi all,

I'm having some trouble installing the H4 headlight assembly. Is the trim ring supposed to fit OVER the headlight seal or compress it? When I place it over, the bottom screw is to high to fit; when I compress the seal (meaning that I push the trim ring into the "O" ring all around), I manage to screw in the retaining screw, but then the top is loose. It's driving me crazy. What is the proper way to get these things on?

Thanks.

The trim ring only presses against the seal.

It is possible that you have the seal oriented improperly, as it has two distinct sides of a capital letter 'L' in cross-section ... and the long side is supposed to go into the groove in the lamp bucket. If you put the short side of the 'L' in the groove ... there is too much preload on the trim ring to fit the headlamp assembly in place properly and get the screw started!

Thanks for the response.

I have the seal properly oriented. As I said before, when the screw is seated, the top part of the assembly is loose. I did a search and read that the ring has a lip that must clip on to the top part of the housing. Is there anything to this? Seems to me that that one screw at the bottom is not enough to the hold the whole thing in solidly.

This page at the Pelican store and this tech article will help. I remember fitting mine was exasperating - one of them went on straight away, the other took about 15 tries for the chrome trim to "bite" at the top. Just enough (but not too much) force applied to the top worked in the end. Get a friend to help you out with this job - as they press down, you can concentrate on tightening the screw.

Cheers

Pete

...got them off. Will try again. Think I see the problem now. Thanks for all the help.

I just finished installing H4's on the 73E about a half hour ago.
What a b!tch!!! Still, they look nice.
