Cookie Cutter History

What is the history of the cookie cutter? What cars are they correct as a option from the factory and at what sizes? Any pics of cars with these wheels? As aways, TIA.

Edit: I guess they also came on 944s? I'm primarily interested in the 911 application.

Yep, only made in 15 and 6 and 7 inch widths. Pressure cast by ATS.

I'm going to guess at '72 to '84 for the years. Standard wheel after the steel wheel and before the phone dial. I know the phone dial came out in '85.

If I am not mistaken, they were the replacement for the steel wheels on cars where the Fuchs were not ordered as an option.

I have a set of 7x15 on my 72 911 that are stamped ATS 1973. Anyone know anything about these [options]?

I use cookies for track wheels (15X6s) on my 72T as I think they too ugly for the street. However, these wheels are notorious for developing stress fractures over time if they are subjected to extensive track use combined with sticky R tires. Check them regularly and pitch at the first sign of microfractures. I have never paid more $50 a wheel for them. HTH

These were standard in 6x15 size on the '73E. 7x15s were available from '74 on some of the later 911s (these work well for track wheels). Even though they are cast, these ATS wheels are tough. I have used them with slicks a number of times - so far no cracks.

Randy, I have personally only seen one ATS wheel with had developed stress fractures but have heard of several other cases among the track junkies of Colorado PCA DE and Vintage racers. The one failure I did see afterwards, was kinda of cool, the hub of broke all around, star shaped. I have eight ATS wheels myself that have been used for four years now as track wheels with no evidence of cracks. Just wanted to give Pelican folks a heads up, I certainly defer to your higher voice of experience and reputation. Fortunately for me, I just finished up my 2 year tenure as the PCA/ RMR Chief Tech Inspector and do not have look as intently for this ATS wheel feature anymore on a regular basis.

Thanks for the heads-up Bill. I have a set of 15x7's and will keep a close eye on them just in case. The cookies are great wheels in terms of price to strength/weight, but we can't expect any 20+ year old part to last forever.

Random question- were cookie cutter wheels standard or optional on the 1970 911E?

Came with my '73 911T from PO. I swapped them out for better looking Fuchs wheels a couple of years ago so the Cookies are sitting sadly in my storage unit. If anyone is interested in them give me a shout. We'll work something out. They look fine but probably need a little cleaning.

We were not a Porsche city. I had seen a 924.

I remember vividly the first time a new wide the wide body 944 rolled up beside me and all I cool see out of my drivers window was that exquisites box flared front fender housing a deep cookie cutter.
(They were deep in comparison to anything I had seen, as it was common for cars of that era to wear hubcaps)

Soon the phone dials and manhole covers came out forever ending that look it seemed.

FWIW the cookies can have variations, they come in 15X6 for Porsche, and 15X7 for 944

Variations include:

A smooth transition from center hub to face, vs a more square transition.

A lip around the outer rim vs no lip

A lip where the face meets the rim vs no lip.

I don't think cookie cutters were available in '70. First offered in '72, I think.
