Re use or replace rear axel bolts
I'm replacing rear wheel bearings on my 87 911. My question is should I replace the 32mm axel nut? Should I replace the hex head bolts on the trans side of the axel?

I have reused mine. No problems. Same ones since 88.

I'd have to buy a lot of them if I didn't reuse them.

just make sure they are long enough,
2-3 threads sticking out past the flange. if not they will come lose if you have the schnor washers its a good idea to replace, if not every time maybe every other time they are off. https://www.belmetric.com/metric-schnorr-washers-c-4_39/ |

Hard no for me. The more times they come on and off the more likely I’ll be dealing with a stripped head. Either way make sure there is no axle grease where the threads go. Also star pattern when torquing them down. Good luck |
The OP must have the later style axle with the big exterior nut that gets torqued to something like 300 ft lbs. Both my cars have that type of axle so I picked up a few extra nuts for future service work. I can't see the sense in reusing them unless you're stuck on the side of the road. As far as the 10mm bolts that attach the inside CV joints to the diff flanges, that's a no brainier. We all know that's been a problem area and that's why Porsche increased the size of the bolts along the way. Replace the bolts and lock washers, and then check them for tightness a couple of times when the car is back on the road.

I re-used all those nut/bolts through multiple removals and never had a problem. Also put over 100k miles and lots of DE days on the car over my 10 years so not like it was sitting. If others report that they "come loose" I honestly believe they never got em tight pr assembled correctly the first time. Maybe they had something in a bind where they got loose later, same result, not tight.
Properly tightened bolts don't come loose commonly. |
