Nice to see 80's 911's still commanding a premium

Just ran across this car on Fleabay. Looks to be a very clean 1989 (Targa no less) fetching a tidy sum. I wonder if the transaction actually went though?

That can't be real. If you can read English, you can find a better deal.

Look at the bid history -

One bid from the winner, and the previous high bid. Something's funny here.

You know, if I could get $28,000 for my Targa, I'd unload it in an instant, and go buy an '89 Turbo.

That cannot be for real. I think if you look at more prices you'll find that 80s 911s go for $14 - $20K. Cabs for a little more.

That's a bogus transaction. The dealership probably found a buyer at the last instant. The bid went from 16k to 28k. Hmmm...it would seems as though the dealer bid on his own car to nix the auction...

I'm not sure about this acution, but 911's here in Denver are priced high. I could not touch the car I just bought for under 14k here.

The auction had a reserve, the reserve was what the high bidder hit. The next high bidder didn't reach the reserve. If the high bidder was below the reserve he would still be the high bidder but you would not see that big jump in the bidding.

I e-mailed the seller and told him "if the deal falls through, let me know" I wonder if he'll be banging at the door for the "sucker who just e-mailed" LOL

that is a bogus bid...also you don't pay a final value fee on autos, only the listing fee

I agreed with you. How can a buyer buy a car with one picture and simple description. There are many more choices out there on ebay with more details.

Who are they try to fool?

Yeah, I agree that it was an invalid bid/transaction, but it was nice to daydream for a while that my `88 might be worth over $25k.

I'd be willing to let my 76 sunroof coupe go for $27k to the buyer. I wonder if he thinks that would be a deal.

I agree the deal looks bogus, but I think that 80's (I sort of watch the 87, 88, 89's ) go for more than $14-20K. I think the $22-26 range may be more inline for a very clean car. Just my 2cents.

There are also a lot of people placing bids on items that they have no intention of buying. Neither the bidder or seller have feedbacks that I would consider buying from or selling to.

interesting strategy...shill bid really high to make other bidders think it is worth a premium, then backdoor the "also rans". I'll bet he sent identical email to the top 5 or so bidders in the auction, and odds are he'll quote you a "nice" price too...
