Was A-pillar VIN tag always there?

I will start with an apology for posting 912 content in the 911 forums but thought that my question might be relavent across the whole line.

We are currently restoring an 1968 912 here at our shop and have come upon a VIN quandry. There is no VIN tag in the A-Pillar of this car, nor is there evidence that there ever was. Our trim guy is the one who brought it to our attention and this is the earliest car that we've ever done here so we are unsure of whether or not there should be a tag there. The front trunk plate and body stamp are there and correct but no holes for an A-pillar tag.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Was just a USA Canada item I believe. ROW cars did not get them.

My 1967 912 Targa did not have a VIN Tag on the A pillar. From what I can find, this may have started in 1968.

I would ask your question over at the Early 911S Registry BBS.

In the United States, the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 (effective January 1, 1968) mandated Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) on the dash or driver's side A-pillar visible from outside through the windshield.

So definitely all US-spec cars built on or after 1/68. May or may not be there on earlier '68 model year cars.
