Another Optima thread....

After 9 months dead, I was finally able to find an old school analog battery charger. After four days of low/hi charging it came back to life. We'll see how long it lasts as it went out of warranty when I was towing it back east and it sat all winter while discharged.

My last one lasted 15 years. I regret having replaced it with the same due to all the bad press Optima has had. But better than dropping three large on a replacement.

Stay tuned....

I had an Optima go completely dead and put it on a charger until fully charged. But, it wouldn’t hold the charge. The battery was under warranty and the parts store replaced it. Then because the I neglected and didn’t trickle charge the next winter, that one went dead, too. So, instead of buying a new battery, I bought an Optima charger. The charger brought my battery back, and no problems since.

What makes the Optima charger so much better than a regular trickle charger or a standard Sears type charger with he 2/12 amp and start function?

It cycles the battery when drained to low. It’s a higher quality charger. I had a Sears charger overcharge a battery.

I got the more expensive one. It was a few years ago and probably paid less than $200. Anyway, look at them online and in the parts store. They’re good quality and have a lot of features.

I think some of the battery minders claim they have some way of varying the charge that de-sulfates the battery.

See your in N.Carolina, I lived on Lake Norman for a while. It's a beautiful state and my favorite time of the year there was fall. Best time to drive the Porsche.

How did the Optima go dead? Optima Reds always need to be 80% charged. Thus if you have a consumer need to use a maintainer with the appropriate AGM setting. I use a CTek maintainer and it works well. My Optimas (2) have several years.

With the original Optima batteries, a typical battery charger wouldn’t work when fully discharged. The suggested procedure was to charge at a high rate for approx. 30 min., (~50-60A), then follow up with a trickle charge while monitoring battery temperature.

Optimal have good shelf life when stored properly, but use a battery maintainer to avoid self-discharging to below a certain threshold.
