Ivan nailed it - Bozo PO left the old bump stops in the front struts when he installed new inserts.

1st time i have seen it it was back in the 1980`s me idiot, try to remove it by blowing air in it..you should have seen my face;-))))

Of course that meant the PO couldn't seat the shock shaft correctly.

Bigger hammer and busted roll pins, no problem -

I went in because the strut DU bushings were shot, lots of play between the insert and strut body.

Pain in the but to remove the bushings, new ones pressed in nicely -

Dumb question. Are those strut bushings required in Boge struts when replacing the inserts, or are they only for Bilstein struts only?

I'm just guessing, but I don't think they are used in Boge struts.

Bilstein inserts are installed upside down from most shocks, shaft down. So the bushings guide the shock body as it goes up and down inside the strut housing.

Makes sense. I've only read about Boge struts being filled with oil and no mention of bushings inside the housing.

Those bushings are only for the Bilstein struts due to the "upside down" mounting of the shock inserts.
