What Was the PO doing?

I purchased this 1977 Porsche 911 project in a box. I am not certain what the previous owner had in mind? I would really like some thoughts into what you think and directions I could take it.

The front has two different valences. The rear deck lid and rear bumper do not appear to be original and the rear fenders are flared. Does anyone recognize the body kit or where the pieces came from?

I believe the engine has been rebuilt (has inserts in the case; only has 2% - 4% leak down per cylinder). It came with a CIS injection (also in a box) but I have a nice set of webers or could megasquirt it.

The exhaust exits out the right-hand side of the car; my exhausts and ones I have seen usually exit out the left-hand side.

Any thoughts would be helpful on the direction to take this project since it is obviously not original at this point.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571955234.jpg

looks like the PO was trying to convert it to a 964 look -- see, e.g. https://petrolicious.com/marketplace/1992-porsche-carrera-rs

depending on what you want, should be pretty straightforward to track down and reinstall the front/rear bumpers that were stock on a 77 and leave the rear fenders as-is (since they look identical to what was added on a 78 or later SC/Carrera) -- otherwise, proceed with the 964 look conversion?

deck lid is from a cabrio with the ET third brake light and darrin is correct front and rear bumpers are 964

Poor man's "yellowbird"...

I really like it. Great lines, a design and build masterpiece. Now lets see it finished and on the road.

?

Did you comment on the right thread Bill?

As for the OP's car... I'm not a fan of forward dating 911 to 964. It's cheesy. I would sell off all the 964 stuff and take it back to stock bumpers and Fuchs. That would be the easiest thing at this point.

It looks like a project, which to me gives you carte blanche to build whatever you want. If you stick with the 964 forward dating, go widebody and stance'd with big wheels. RWB-ish.

IF you want to stick with SC flares, you could rock an SCRS look with glass bumpers.

Spend some time looking at other people's projects and set a design goal and stick to it.

Opinions are like A...

It’s your car. Make it what you want. They are only original once, just like a virgin. This car’s cherry was popped long ago. Have at her in your style.

Here's what my RSR "replica looked like when I got it:

But it also had a twin-plugged aluminum cased 2.8 w/ crankfire, SC front suspension, Recaros and steel flares.

Here's what it looked like once I was done changing it to my liking. Also installed a 915 tranny with Quaiffe from the 901, 944T brakes and TWO throttle bodies w/ Haltech.

Let the work begin.

The yellow car appears to have 964 quarterpanels on it, judging by the lack of a torsion bar hole and the mounting points for the rocker panels. With some metal work they can be fixed to match 911SC/Carrera panels, or you could have some RS flares welded on it they cover enough and the existing panels are in decent shape. So it isn't a simple bolt on operation to completely replace the 964 parts.

My thoughts exactly. It's not just the bumpers that have been modified here. If it were my car, I'd put the proper bumpers, rear taillights/reflector back on it, then run it sans rockers for a more hotrod look.

spyerx 10-25-2019 12:42 PM

cocaine was a hell of a drug... 90s look - rad

honestly these sort of blank canvas non-original cars are what make Porsche so awesome.

you sure don't see this sort of personalization with ferrari...

Thanks for all the response and ideas. I do really appreciate them. If I hadn't wanted other people's visions, I wouldn't have asked.

Based on the responses, I now see that this was being converted into a 964 / poor-man's yellowbird (especially given parts I still have in boxes).

I agree that it is kinda cheesy to post-date a car from a look perspective without doing the performance as well.

Given the good eye of Cory (nice catch), it sounds like it's not going to be as straight forward putting it back to stock. I don't have the original pieces (they didn't come with the project).

I do like the thoughts of heading toward an RWB look (he's done fabulous work) but it's a bit too radical for my style.

I'm also intrigued with the sans rocker look for a slightly hot rod style.

I would still like to know if any of you recognize the second valance that is not on the car. I think it is upside down in the picture.

Thanks again for the varied directions I could take this. Please keep the suggestions coming. It's helping me get further creative juices flowing.

And keep it yellow. Canary yellow, fly yellow...

wreckah 11-01-2019 03:35 AM

i don't dislike the 964 look TBH...but the fit seems not great...maybe it's just not bolted together at this point.

All depends on what your goals are: if you want to drive the car without investing too much, i think the 964 look will be the cheapest for you...most of it is done.

Turning back to stock, backdating, etc etc...all will be very expensive. Metalwork, painting, OEM parts, etc...

Technically: i would EFI it. Invest once, enjoy for years and years. Of course, if you have the webers lying around, that'd be a great option if you are in a reasonable climate and you don't have to daily it in freezing temps e.g.

I agree. My 76 has 965 steel rear quarters and as you can see the torsion bar hole uses a little bolt on metal cover. Not sure about the narrow bodies though as maybe the rocker cover just covers the opening? It looks like a fairly decent conversion to me and narrow body 964's look pretty cool with the right stance and wheels. I would finish it.

Coastr 11-01-2019 12:52 PM

I don’t think the quarter is replaced. 964 kits have a different sill cover and looks like the torsion hole has been cut out to fit a sill cover.

Options : yellowbird look is cool but needs to be a turbo. 964 turbo look is cool but same thing and you need widebody.

FG IB kit (scrs/ iroc/ C3.o look or similar) is where I would go. The 964 conversions fall flat with a 70s interior IMO. But then the company that gets all the singer leftovers has lots of 964 parts so maybe going that direction could be fun. 964 RS clone?

PCA7GGR 11-01-2019 01:16 PM

The White Rat had the same steel rear quarters but covered with C2/4 side valances. When a fellow Pelican was cutting up a longhood, I bought the torsion bar “holes” - the sheet metal around it that is. Had then pieced in when I took it babe to a more original “RSR”.

Matt Monson 11-01-2019 01:21 PM

Convert the rear end to rsr style coil overs and the holes don’t matter. If it were mine I would finish it with an SC-RS look while leaving the fenders. And stay yellow.

It has 964 parts .
It might not be the full quarter panel , but the lower section where the sharks-fin covers is definately 964 .
It has the triangle .....
This section has to be removed to repair the kidney bowls , so no big deal to swap to 964 as you’re repairing rust .
Likewise , no big deal to swap back .

I’d like to see more .
Just to see exactly how much of it is 964
