Cleaned up my oil tank
My tank was looking rough so I steam cleaned the inside and powder coated the exterior. I have purchased a new gasket and oil lever sender. How do I glue the gasket to the tank?
Thanks David |

Pretty sure there is no need to glue it. Doesn't it get squished between the tank and fender well when you bolt the tank back in? Maybe I am misremembering, but I don't think I've ever glued one of those seals on...

Yes, it definitely will get squished once it is installed. When I removed the old one is was stuck in place so I assumed that it was glued in place.

I glued mine with a simple contact adhesive (Evostick) figuring that once it is clamped in place the glue has done its job so it wouldn’t matter if it couldn’t take the heat. The biggest challenge was trying to compress the seal as I attempted to fit the nuts to the studs. Not easy!

To ensure that the tank is clean I plugged the holes again and put a gallon of mineral spirits swishing it around every hour. After eight hours I drained the very dirty mineral spirits. I refilled it with a gallon of clean mineral spirits and will let it soak over night. I guess I will continue with this regimine until the mineral spirits comes out clean. I don't want to take any chances.
Amazon is supposed to deliver a bore scope tomorrow so I can see inside. |

These cork gaskets can become porous after some time and begin to seep. I believe the factory used something like Loctite 574 to rub into it to avoid seeps. Not a lot, just a little.
