What is this behind my carpet?
The carpet under the dash on the driver side has come loose and drops down, getting in the way of my clutch. Is this some kind of sound deadening material or something that was glued to the chassis and then the carpet glued on top of it?
I hate to think about trying to get all that out, but maybe I should and then replace it. Thoughts? And questions: - what’s the best way to get it out? Just a plastic scraper and elbow grease? - any suggestions on replacement for the material? |

Dry ice and wack it with a plastic hammer, for one.

factory installed sound deadening. Dried out over time , cracked and now falling off. Scrape away (chisel), using some thick gloves as the edges could be sharp and you can cut yourself
Go as far as possible , removing until you hit solidly attached material. OR-- if you want to remove all of it, then get some dry ice, place it against the black material for about 20 minutes and it should chisel off , also using a mallet to break it up. A lot of people use dyna mat , or similar to replace it. some use a product called Lizard Skin. Whatever you use, proper preparation is 95% of the job |
You also have that on the floor there as well. I used a variable speed multi tool (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Genesis-2-5-Amp-Variable-Speed-Multi-Purpose-Oscillating-Tool-GMT25T/205463751) that makes this super-easy. Otherwise, heat, chiseling, cursing, etc. is all required to get it out. You can find them less expensive I think at Northern Tool / Harbour Freight. Then use Dyna products to replace, etc. Lots of threads out on the forum about it with opinions and approaches. Good luck.

Thanks for the info and tips!
One question - looking at the PET (should’ve done that first) it came from the factory with sound deafening on the floor pans as well, but it has been removed from all of my floor pans. I know adding it there will add a few pounds of weight, but I’m wondering if it would help reduce a lot of road noise - increasing my wife’s enjoyment. 😉 Thoughts? |
I was lucky and got all of mine out with a chisel and heat gun. most popped off with the chisel.
almost done sand blasting the tub for paint. good luck. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1572185267.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1572185267.JPG |
