Getting new window gaskets to fit
Hi everyone,
I purchased new rear quarter windows gaskets for my 79SC from our host. First I went with OEM which were too thick to fit so sent them back and our host was fantastic and took back the return in exchange for the Porsche brand ones. They arrived and I tried fitting them today and have the exact same issue. When I compare them to the original seal the channel where you would run the rope is a good 10mm deeper on my originals than on the ones sent by our host. I am loosing my mind. Perhaps I don't know what I am doing but we are applying a LOT of pressure from the outside (thankgoodness plexi is going in because I wouldn't want to be pushing this hard on glass) and there is just no way physically that these are going in. Part numbers are: • 911-543-035-01-OEM •*911-543-036-01-OEM Seems to be a recurrant issue and I was curious to know if anyone has suggestions before I return these as well and just stick it out with the originals. I just replaced one of mine and ooooooooh boy was it a biatch!

I converted to the 993 style rubber which did away with the need for the metal trim pieces. It was not as hard to install and as long as the rest of your trim is black does not stand out as different

Granted mine have pop out windows, but they were a total biatch to mount as well. I'm not sure if this is applicable to non pop out windows, but on mine, sliding it into and seating it on the edge that meets the door first was key. Then using my palm to roll it over until the bead 'snapped' into the groove. If those tips aren't applicable, this next one will be. Patience and perseverance. And soapy water.

The thick rubber piece that faces the front of the car was the hardest part of the install for me. I was able to get it in that channel with plenty of clear dish soap diluted with a little water. We used a thick-gauged wire instead of rope on the rest of the seal and that seemed to help quite a bit too. Make sure to wrap the wire correctly in the seal. I leaned on the glass/trim while my buddy pulled the wire. Lots of soap used here too. You want the small part of the glass that faces the rear of the car to go in last. At least that's how we did it :cool:
