Looking for feedback on possible new purchase
Today I looked at 82 911 Targa for my wife. Description: 1 owner, 1982 911 SC U.S. Targa, VIN# WPOEAO917CS162098. This car appeared to be in excellent condition, no rust, no tears on interior, no cracks on dash, all guages functional, no dents, no accident history, motor had overhaul in August 2002, car has working air condioning, power windows. Car has 124K, engine work was performed by reputable Porsche shop. Owner claims to have receipts for $8000 in motor work--I'll be verifying this info Monday at the garage where work was done, and getting more specific details on what was actually done. Test drive proved that car handled well and ran strong. My question: seller is asking $12,500. Does this seem like a fair price? Thanks for the feedback

great price if what you said is true...

get the reciepts and see what he did. "overhaul" can mean alot of things to different people

Sounds like a fair price in todays market.

I'd agree with Matt...fair price. About right for a 100K+ SC, maybe a bit high for a targa, but the engine work is worth something (maybe). Make sure the head studs were replaced. An SC shouldn't really need serious engine work at that mileage unless studs broke or something bad happened. Check the engine work carefully. In some ways it's nice to have someone else pay the big bills (you never get that money back when you sell it), BUT in other ways it is preferable to have it done yourself so you can control the variables. Depends on how you like to do things, and I don't think there is a right or wrong answer.

I'm also curious why an SC with 124K miles needed $8K in engine repairs.

One word, Dilivar!:p

One more word: PPI
Well it's not a word, but you get the idea. Let the same mechanic do a detailed Pre-Purchase Inspection. You might consider a leak down or compression test as well. |
Thanks for the feedback, talked to the shop that did the work on the car. The shop pulled up the invoice and said they had replaced the fuel distributor replaced head studs added Carrera chain tensioers complete valve job and also replaced the clutch. I was told he also had new brakes and tires added when the car was in their shop.It doesn't add up to 8k but he definetly put money into it. Talking to the seller today and was told reason for selling now was due to lack of driving it and concerns of additional expence as car gets older.
Thanks for any feedback Bill |
Go for it....... and welcome to the board!

Just a follow up:
I purchased the car last week and am very pleased with it. Everything was checked out and it came away with a clean bill of health. The car seems to sit a little high right now at 26 and 26 1/2, but that will be taken care of soon. I've got it scheduled to have it painted in late May, since my wife wants a different color. I'll be interested to see how much better the car will look when my painter gets done with it. For a sample of his work you can you can check the gallery photos of my 74 under "lapue." One more thing I wanted to add was that my '74 2.7 will flat out run away from the Targa but at 500lbs. lighter and approximately 60 additional h.p., what should I expect? Bill |
