That's what I was hoping. I can't open it all the way because it hits the strut brace. Could not see any screws. I was thinking that I had to hit the pins out like on a door.
Just what I thought, another job that should take 15 min will now take over an hour. Go to love the porsche.
Thanks

Hahaha.. you guys make me laugh.

When I tackle a project, it probably takes me 2 or 3 times the time it takes an average Pelican to do. But oh well, at least I'm getting better.

Sorry for sounding totally stupid, but what/where is the "smuggler's box"?

Here is one open. We emptied it out completely. The steering column and brake lines run in there, along with a ton of AC components (all bye bye!)

And as a point of reference for people who search in the future, the ROW cars have a smaller smugglers box that only provides access for the steering joint. It is also mounted front to rear rather than left to right. Maybe Euros are the same as ROW???

Are you sure about this?
Th fascinating thing about these cars is that the chassis numbers..alongside the smugglers box...has the "ZZZ" numbers in the middle that form the basis for the ROW's VIN number...but not the USA car's VIN number. Meaning....from a "body" perspective...all chassis are seemingly the same, and would call into doubt that Euro cars have different smuggler box sizes.

By the way...ROW cars ( Rest-of-world) are typically mant to mean Euro cars, to differentiate them from USA / Japan / Sweden, etc....with special features, usually emissions related. All smugglers boxes I've seen hinge the same way...regardless of ROW or USA spec.

Expathk/Wil - there are differences in the size/shape of the smuggler's box between models but this difference relates to LHD vs RHD cars. The smuggler's box on RHD cars is quite a bit smaller.

Andyjboy:
Quite.....( RHD vs LHD)
I'm asking, however, if the LHD drive cars are implied to be different? The first response from Expathk said ROW were different...not RHD were different.

Well if I have time I'll try to find the thread from a few years ago about this subject of ROW and Euro cars.

As explained in detail at one time, there were differences between Euro and ROW (in designation and function).

I previously use to post details of my car as being Euro but was clearly corrected by several in the know, that it was in fact ROW.

The LHD RHD drive issue makes sense so I stand corrected on the ROW thing...I do know that my RDH 911 87 Carrera Cab ROW smugglers box is much smaller and hinges open left to right. This is different from the picture presented in this thread.

My evap. for the a/c is located in the passenger footwell inside the cabin, not in the smugglers box. My smugglers box is not large enough for the evap. by a long way, you'd be lucky to smuggle anything in there! except a dead mouse.

Cheers
Mark

Well, at least I now understand the semantics ( language) used...but I still didn't see a clear answer.

For all the LHD drive cars....aren't the smuggler's boxes the same ??

(For reference, I took ROW to mean Rest-of-World....to differentiate between basically Euro and USA options/emissions specs .. both LHD).
