I found myself bored today. Not for lack of projects, just lack of ambition as I was lettting the blood content of my alcolhol stream come back to normal after the bachelor party I attended last night.

So I had an idea. The SPI (sewer pipe intake) that I made up to use with the BigWing makes some nice noise, as the inlet is positioned right below the grille. I had considered the fact that it might not be the most effective setup, because of the length of the tube, what with frictional losses and al. I thought it would be a cool idea to counter those losses by increasing the diameter of the tube at the inlet, and then narrow it down just before the AFM. Hmmm.

I picked up a piece of 4" sewer pipe, glued it to a 3" elbow, and bolted it up. The butt-dyno tells me it might be little snappier, but the ear dyno leaves no doubt that there's a difference in the sound. It has a howl that (literally) scares small children.

What was the point of this excercise? Eh, there really wasn't one. But it was a fun way to waste an hour or so this afternoon, and it set me back ~$10 for the materials I didn't already have on hand.

How about the OEM '65 - '73 filter ... it can flow enough air to feed an MB 600 V-8! Only real drawback is that it isn't a 'fashionable' cone shape ... just a big, fat cylinder!

Or, how about a ShopVac HEPA filter???

Even if you reduced your performance with the oversize intake, it is probably worth it to scare small children.

This means you will be getting a filter the size of a small bin then?

Looking at the K&N Site they have a filter which might work - RU 4260, which is a cone filter 5" long, 5 7/8" at the base taping down to 5 1/8"
Or the RU3480, 6" long, 5 7/8" tapering down to 5"

It may be the lack of filter that gives you the terror-inducing sound, more than the increased flush-master size.

BTW, it's no wonder the kids are scared. The smaller ones could easily get sucked into that thing.

Best to get a filter on asap just to be safe :p

Taking the air cleaner off of either of my cars makes a HUGE difference, especially the 911. Open MFI stacks (yes, even on a lowly 'T') are goosebumps material.

I understand the new BMW Z4 actually pipes intake sound into the cabin for that added effect.

Its not unusual for car and motorcycle engineers to spend a lot of time and money on how the intake and exhaust sounds on their machines-Miata, just the right exhaust note, Yamaha- sounds like a harley. I did some designing for a supermarket chain that piped fresh bread smells from the bakery into the ac ducts of the store so the smell would go all over the store. For some buyers its all in the smell, touch, feel and sound not in the performance.

The 3D CAD drawings looks alot like the RUF yellow bird intake in the new Exellence. hmmmmmm... Will it be aluminum or fiberglass or best of all carbon fiber. If you still have it in CAD would you mind emailing it to me. I'd like to get some dimensions and give it a shot myself.

Hi Terry, Yess it was concepted from the Ruff version but scaled to replace stock Air Intake housings. The 3D format is SolidWorks.
The assembly is comprised of 6 parts total.
The prototype will be made of 16Ga cold rolled steel for ease of forming and welding then it will get powder coated. If it works out I will have additional intakes made out of either Polycarbonite or Carbon fiber.
If you have software that can handle solidworks I will send you the files if not I can send you a .PDF sketch of the pieces.
Let me know.

Edit: I forgot to mention the use of this Intake does require you to back date your heater system. Steel version will weigh 4.1 lbs

I've searched for a cone-style air filter for a '79 911SC, 3.0. No one seems to make one. Anyone know of an alternative filter setup for the 3.0

Hi Bill, The only way you can put a cone filter on a stock intake for your 3.0 is to fabricate an adapter that would attach to the end of the snorkel.
Not to practical.. why do you want a cone filter?
