Front wheel bearings
Yelp! I am doing something wrong.
Poking at my 1986 911 this weekend and the bearing where quite loose. So I pulled the caps and the washer behind the nut was in spec to the book (a drag, but not too tight) More being more, (who else owns a performance car with 9 fans!?) I over tightened the bearings in hopes of getting the wobble out of them. They felt tighter but still loose. Something is clearly wrong. Any suggestions? Thanks! Andrew |

You need to check the strut, what you are feeling could actually be the shock insert moving in the strut body. This happens when the bushings near the strut cap wear out. If possible get a helper to rock the wheel top to bottom while you feel around and see if you can isolate where the movement is taking place. If you over tighten the spindle nut significantly you will damage the bearings.

have an assistant press firmly on the brake pedal
If wobble is gone then, most likely, you need new wheel bearings If the wobble remains check suspension and steering components

I've replaced my front wheel bearings two or three times now and had a few people set the tension, but there's still a little bit of play in each. I even did the strut bushings as well, no change. I can't imagine that it can be anything except the hubs/spindles are both worn exactly the same on both sides... Which is kind of silly.
I've tracked the cars for years like this, it hasn't changed at all. I don't know, kind of given up on it. |

I love the idea of hitting the brakes and checking then.
David, so the play is still there and you are just accepting it? (not being a smarty pants. Just verifying your logic because that is where I am probably heading, too.) |
