1k or 2k paint in wheel wells

Guys,

I am doing a suspension overhaul on all four corners of my car. I have the suspension off the car and good time to do some touch up work in the wheel wells.

PO had some really wide wheels on the car before and has rubbed off some of the paint/undercoating and sealer in a few spots.

I will be epoxy primering the bare metal spots and then laying down some under coating on top of it.

Need to paint the undercoating so wondering, is the paint that was used to color the undercoating a 1k or 2k paint? I don't see a clear so will be a single stage paint touch up job.

Thanks!

97 993. Arctic White. Based on my research my understanding from factory the painters used the same body paint and sprayed the wells as they sprayed color coat on the body panels... so I assume it's a 2k (2 part paint) but no clear coat?

You should post on the 964/993 forum.

When you say 1K and 2K do you mean single stage vs. base/clear?

You might as well use the 2K as it's harder. Better for stone chips. Single stage isfine. If you do decide to use a base coat I would clear coat over it to make it more water proof (corrosion proof) as just the base coat is a bit porous. Then some coating like Wurth Stone guard to stop it getting chipped from stones and other road debris.

1K is rattle can, 2K is catalyzed and as Bill says, much more durable.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yes, to be more specific, what I was wondering was whether to use a 2 part catalyzed paint or not. Also looking to a single stage (color only), than a two-stage (color + clear) job.

This will be touch up work. I was not planning on respraying the entire wheel well. I was thinking of doing the following:

1. Wire-wheel the bare metal spots to get them clean. Clean/prep the surface for primer.
2. Spray epoxy primer (2 part catalyzed paint) to seal the bare metal
3. Spray weather proofing. I have some 3M black under coating in a rattle can that worked well on another project. I will look into the Wurth stuff...
4. Spray some sort of colored paint to match the rest of the wheel well

Based on the comments above sounds like 2K single stage the way to go... anything wrong with the approach above?

Thanks

there are 2K cans on the market btw... s' what I use when it has to be done quick for some engine tin or other uncomplicated stuff, satin black is always handy.
