I don't know what the original tire size was, but my '70 T has
185 R 14.

These are 185/70-14.

Their smaller than the original spec. The speedometer reads about 10%-12% higher than actual speed (of course, that may help prevent a speeding ticket!).

14s are hard to find--sizes to choose from are very limited. From what I've found, you can get 195/75-14s, which would only be about 1/2 % smaller than the original diameter tire.

Yes, mine are 185/70 R14. They are Michelin MX4's which were on the car when I bought it. They look about right for the period.
I know that 14 inch tires are hard to come by nowadays.

lagrassa, nice Targa.

Looks like you're at the standard ride height (?). My car had been lowered by the original owner in the early 70s and has been that way ever since. When I found the 14s at a good price, I took off my 15" chromed steel wheels. The combination of a lowered car and a shorter tire makes it "real low."

Also sounds like you've got a lot of nice originality. If you have a complete early tool kit, you're one up on me!

Thanks. I bought it from the original owner and he said it came stock with the 14's. 15's may have been an option. It is the stock height and the car retains most of it's originality. Yes, I do have the complete early tool kit, plus a Porsche tire gauge!

14" tires, not Fuchs wheels.

185/70 R14 tires

Why does everyone say they're hard to come by, and Tire Rack has three pages of this size.

Will any 185/70 R14 fit my 14" X 5.5 fuchs?

185/70 R14s aren't that hard to find, and they will fit your 124 x 5.5 Fuchs just fine...that what I have now.

Issue is that the tire is smaller (diameter) than stock. The engine will spin 10-12% faster for a given road speec than with the stock tire--the 185 R 14, which would be roughly a 185/80 R14. Steady speeds on the Interstate get old pretty fast.

So I'd be looking at a 195/75 R14 what would have closer to the proper size. And depending on what quality you want in the tires, choice is certainly more limited than sizes common for modern cars.

Roger, will the 195/75/14 allow my instruments to read properly. What would the widest tire size that would fit with proper clearance.

from what I see from other people, 195s are fine; 205s are getting close to the max and may depend on the brand of tire, alignment settings, whether the fenders are rolled, etc.

A good tire calculator I use is here:
Tire size calculator
So a 195/75-14 is going to be about as close as you can get.

195/70/14 are plentiful and complement the wheel very well. +1 on the Falkens. They're a great bang for the buck. I see ads for them on craigslis all the time. This is where I buy my tires when needed.
(175/65R14 $38)(185/60R14 $41)(185/65R14 $42)(185/70R14 $40)=NEW TIRES

FUCHS 14" are 5.5" wide. (see Rennlist of 911 wheels)

Original spec for this wheel listed by Porsche as "approved tires for 1969 models" under "comfort group" 185 R14 (travel 786 revs/mi)

My Fuchs were on the car I bought wearing tires: 185/70 R14 in the back (834revs/mi, -5.7%) and 195/60 R14 front (869revs/mi, -9.5%) . The body fender-tire gap looks too big. Not good..

The closest alternatives to 185(/82) R14 are as listed above, ty all :
195/75 R14 (790revs/mi, -0.5%) and 195/70 R14 (815revs/mi, -3.5%)

There is one more tire size to consider. Would 205/70 R14 (797revs/mi, travels at just -1.4% off original spec) be an option? eg Vredestein Sprint Classic 205/70 VR 14 95 V
- Would it fit on 5.5" wide rims? Dunlop tire technical facts lists rim width ideal to be 70% of tire width, for high profile tires. >>> 5.5"x25.4mm/in / 205mm = 68.1% which is close. Same calculation for /195mm yields 71.6% - so both are good for todays radial tires
- Would they clear the wheel wells on an early 911, 912 body (1969)? Anyone tried?
- Other issues to consider?

FWIW: The FUCHS 14" X 5.5" wide came as stock on our 1971 911E, as part of a comfort group available that year.

195/70/14 is your best bet. This size is plentiful. It will also keep your speedometer accurate.
