3.2L missing upper throttle return spring, OK?

Before taking possession of the "new to me" 3.2L engine, the cruise control assembly was removed. I wasn't planning to use cruise control, so no problem.

But, they also removed the bracket that holds the throttle return spring. Do I need this? I have the spring that goes from the bellcrank to the bottom of the manifold, is that all I need?

The bracket circled in green, the one circled in red, and the spring circled in yellow are missing.

Others may chime in but I would want to have both springs in place before I drove it.

We see plenty of cars with only one spring in place after many years of service/repair. Not optimal, but the throttle return is still adequate. I would however suggest getting that second spring installed as soon as you can.

The post '86 3.2's actually had 3 throttle return springs: 2 located under the intake manifold (previous only one) and one acting directly on the butterfly arm.

So I think 2 should be your absolute minimum.

Appreciate the reply's. I vaguely remember at an Autocross with my dad, many years back, that they inspected for two return springs. Makes sense.

Of course the missing bracket is NLA, but looks to be something easily fabricated.

In the PET I noticed a torsion spring mounted on the bell crank cross shaft, could be for the later '86 cars. Might be a good option for me, but does not look to be a simple add on. The bell crank needs an additional arm to catch the spring...

Think of it as belts and suspenders at the same time. Wide open throttle is never a good thing when you are wanting idle. I would get at least two springs on it.

Thoughts of runaway WOT pushed this little bracket and spring to a priority.

Fabricated a new return spring bracket and of course deleted the cruise control arm. Looks cleaner and functions perfectly.
