Is there anything good about these cars, I know they are not like the 1973 RS, or would you go with an early 911T?

Well, the Carrera looked cooler than the regular 911 back in '74, but for the USA models, the engines were the same.

As expressed above, the only really desirable `74 Carrera is the ROW (Euro) model, which is basically an RS with impact bumpers and better suspension. The US version is little more than a regular `74 CIS 2.7L 911 with rear flares, side-script decals, and a duck tail. The (US) ones I have seen for sale are usually way overpriced (sometimes twice as much as the standard `74 911 prices). For the same $$, you would be better off buying a nice SC. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Careful????
I like mine, and you can get a great deal on these cars...... very fun to drive and every bit a Porsche. The bad "rap" comes from the magnesium block and studs pulling out of them. With inserts, carrera upgraded chain tensioners and a pop-off valve, these cars are fearless and fun to drive. I bought mine for a shell price and then rebuilt the motor and I'm very satisfied ![]() But then again, I don't like fuchs either? Hah ha

Rob-
Sorry, I wasn't bashing "middle year" (mag case 2.7L) 911's in general, and have even owned a couple. It is just my observation that specifically, the U.S. mid year Carrera 2.7's seem to be overpriced for what they are. Of course, your `74 (and more importantly: what you paid, and the work you've done to it) are definitely the exception to the rule. Nice car! Last edited by Eric Coffey; 04-01-2003 at 11:25 AM.. |

I also am a big fan of the 2.7. I bought a 1976 2.7 with all the reinforcemnts already on it (documented of course) and its faster and more fun to drive than my buddies 3.2.
Although there were two owners before me and I think the first one added some extras to it. Just my opinion, so all the SC guys can chill. |

No Sweat Eric,
As my irish buddy would say..... Just MESSIN' WITH YA!!!!!!!!! (the other Eric) I'm actually very aware of the drawbacks with my year/engine, that's why I've done all the work. I just decided to put in an external fender mounted oil cooler too; since I've done some high perf. mods to the engine (higher compression, SC cams), better safe than sorry. I got one supplied and installed for $1200 Canadian, which is a great price. Thanks for posting! Cheers

2.7
I have a '74 and had a 2.7 in it that had somewhat of a death rattle in the chain tensioner area. At the time I was debating on having the engine taken out and rebuilt entirely, when a low mileage 3.0 came along, which I supplanted for the 2.7.
In the same vein, aside from that rattle, I had no problem whatsoever with the 2.7. And I flaged it fairly hard and regularly. Like the above posters said, a rebuilt 2.7 with good certs is a wonderful engine, and in '74, they came with the early heat exchangers which is arguably the best exhaust system Porsche ever made. Also, the 2.7 is light because of its magnesium block. Nonetheless, be very careful: to rebuild a 2.7 involves more than just timecerts. Re-boring has to occur, among other things. But if it's a strong engine, it's golden. Case in point: a 2.7S engine (ROW) makes 175 hp. An American SC engine makes 180. The 5hp difference can probably be made up with driver ability. Good luck.
