What make of high wattage bulbs ( 100 w high beam) are you guys using (and are happy with), and where have you purchased them?
These are for an SC with added head light relays. Thx |

I bought the Hella 55/100W bulbs from our host. Put them in years ago and they continue to work just fine. $5.75 each.

I had Hella 80/100W in my '84 with relays. They worked fine, although realistically the increase in light output over 55/60 is minimal. Don't expect miracles.

I am very happy with the light output. I don't understand how to justify spending $1000 on LED headlights when pretty much the same effect can be had for $11.50 plus shipping.

I think if I was using bulbs of that 130/90 W variety, I'd upgrade the wiring from the relays to the lights (and relay to battery) and use ceramic plugs for the high heat of the bulbs.

You have to be careful with 100w bulbs in that they will often melt the connectors.
I prefer LED bulbs.......and not those $1000 things but just the LED bulb. Work great for me in my 1973.

Thank you Kevin. Good information that I will consider when the time comes for the install, especially the ceramic plugs, if I can locate them.

Even with the better focus of the H4 system, high-wattage
bulbs are usually not the wise pick. With upgraded wiring and relays in the headlamp circuit It's tempting to grab for big wattage numbers, but it's usually counterproductive. Please see bulb test results posted by Virgil on CPF Interesting headlight bulb test results Note how the only advantage the 100/90w bulb gives is in amount of light on high beam. Seeing distance on low beam is inferior to that from a high-luminance/high-efficacy 60/55w bulb. The current best pick in 60/55w bulbs is made by Tungsram (GE of Europe); it is a +120 item that is a few developmental iterations improved over the +80/+90 bulbs in the linked comparison. Daniel Stern keeps them in stock for $43.18/pair.
