Bling up my engine compartment
 

I run an '86 wide body which is mint in the bodywork, wheels and interior departments, but it's let down when I open the engine lid. I've done my best to clean everything but the engine is difficult to get outstanding unlike one of your V8s where you can bolt on chrome headers, valve covers, nice air cleaner etc. and you get a show motor.
So I was thinking along the lines of getting the fan stove enamelled guards red, same as the car, chroming all the cam feed oil pipes, billet rear engine mount, billet turbo valve covers, but I'm not sure what is available for the intake side of things. Does anybody do like a K&N filter with an induction ram pipe or similar. Any other thoughts regarding making my engine compartment something that I would be proud to show would be most appreciated. Cleaning and removing heater blower goes a long way. Re plating existing parts helps too....

Man, there are a lot of really attractive examples of air-cooled 911 engines out there. To me, chrome plating and odd colored fans are not part of that equation. Your car is purposeful. Imo, your engine should carry forward that theme.

As a note, if I were to do this again I would make black fuel lines and fittings.

^ Agree! I've seen pictures of many 'blinged' up 911 engine compartments and they always drift very far into the 'personal taste' realm. Which may or may not be appealing to others - in the event you want to resell later.
Also, before painting anything in/around the fan red, look up "motormeister"... you want to distance your car from that, not evoke it.
Lastly, look at the Singer engine compartments... IMO, that's about as 'fancy' as a 911 should go. Understated, expensive, purposeful!

Nice and clean works for me....the carb or ITB's always look great but that's not bling...I spend more time looking thru the windshield.

Nice work. Love the Aircraft Hoses. If seen that in a flew. I am very familiar with aircraft engines and those heat ducting hoses work well. Why not in these engines? Here so similar..

My opinion - Red cooling fans lower the value of any 911. You don't want anybody thinking that MM did your motor...

years ago I did an intake refresh on my 85 911, and in the process blinged things too much, mainly polished a lot of stuff. but at that time it seemed like a good thing to do. sold that car last year.

in the process of a full restoration of a 78 SC/930 conversion. I plan to keep all the engine stuff either natural metal, some cast aluminum VHT paint, and a little black accents. purposeful and clean.

in order to do this I had to have a number of engine and engine bay parts chemically stripped as the PO had stuff power coated in a rainbow of colors... :eek:

had Shaun, Tru-6, cerakote my fan/housing.

Do you have stock in Alcoa?

If you must do something, get all the metal pieces reanodized, have the fan blades powder coated like new and the engine shroud repainted. If you need new engine decals, get them so everything looks like new or better than new. Please don’t go down rice road and devalue your car but that’s you choice.

As they used to say in the 60s, “its your trip“

less is more. Keep decklid closed or just go for a drive and forego the car show.

The only way to get a truly clean engine is to tear it down and clean/scrub each part and replace all the old hoses and rubber bits. Then, all you have to do is to very carefully and correctly reassemble the engine so that it doesn't leak anywhere. There is no other way that I am aware of. Good luck!
