78 SC A/C Electrical Help Needed
Bought a solid very original '78 SC with the exception of the motor needing rebuild, which I was able to do myself, and the A/C not working.
A new compressor was installed but not plumbed or wired. Decided to got the Griffiths route with a complete system so my wife would ride with me. After a few days had the old out /new in, then took it to get evacuated and charged. Holding a charge the A/C would NOT run on its own, but WOULD run when the A/C guy applied power direct to the compressor. Troubleshooting revealed the thermostat (left dial) and fan switch (rt. dial) both working properly with power going into and out of each. The problem is with the original green wire from the thermostat to the compressor has no current or continuity. Wiring diagram says direct shot between the two? Not sure the diagram is correct on that straight shot. Electrical in not my strong suit. Do not know actual wiring path through the car to trace for problems. A friend suggested run new wire but would rather like to resolve original set up. Suggestions/ approaches appreciated. Thanks |
The green wire is a direct run from the compressor through the tunnel to a single plug in the trunk or maybe at the controls.

Check the relay in the smugglers box.

I have no air conditioning so my wife WON'T ride with me.

Working AC is a wonderful thing and allows me to drive all through the hottest part of summer in comfort.
For any question on the AC, your best bet is contact Charlie directly. He will reply be email, or call you back on the phone. His email will include exact procedures for what to do. He has the type of tech support other companies should replicate. |
Check the smugglers box relay and its fuse. I had similar problems and the fuse had died. Scratched my head until somebody suggested this possibility. Replaced the fuse and, bingo, AC. Blew again and I traced the problem to a bad front condenser motor.
My wife won't ride with me anyway unless forced so the AC is for me. |
