Up and down strut play

Bilstein struts, right side has a substantial thump going over bumps.

Put the front end on jack stands, pulled off the tire.

Lifting up on the hub, lots of play.

Removed the top strut not and swung the strut top out from under the fender. I can grab the chrome shaft and lift up and it moves almost 1/4 inch relative to the strut body.

Any ideas why the strut cartridge has vertical play in the housing?

Worn roll pin probably. The rounded side of the pin goes against the shock shaft. The shaft could also be worn at the roll pin. Pull it and see.

does it block after 1/4 inch or can you fully pull it out?!

because if the rollpin at bottom broke/got lost you should be able to pull it out fully.
strange indeed...

The loose travel stops at about 1/4", can not pull the insert out fully.

The bottom roll pin looks good on one side, but partially collapsed on the other. I'm sure John is correct that my roll pin is buggered.

I could not find a PN in the PET, but found this from Rennline -

https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/RENS40290.htm?pn=REN-S-40290&bt=Y&fs=0&SVSVSI=808

The above part is a single wrap pin, where the original pins look to be coiled roll pins.

Is this the correct replacement part?

Order one of these while you are at it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008M22GJ6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This tool makes removing and installing roll pins a piece of cake.

Single wrap beefy pin. The split away from the shaft.

Ayles, Thanks for that tool link. Made the job go so much smoother!

John Walker called it. Roll pin was installed backwards (slot facing shaft) and the roll pin had collapsed.

View of old pin, facing wrong direction -

Opposite side, showing collapsed pin -

And pin removed -

New pin installed and no more knocking in the front right corner.

Appreciate the help!
