Shift coupler set screw not seating
Working through wobbly shifting on my 901 trans... All bushing were replaced and still had a lot of play on the shifter. I tracked it down to the set screw itself on the coupler. I ordered a new one and no improvement.
With no coupler the set screw sits in the trans input shaft nice and tight. The set screw threads into the coupler no problem and can travel as deep as I want when not fitted. However, when the coupler is actually fitted to the shaft the set screw only goes to a certain depth and stops. Based on the measurements I did with just the set screw it needs pretty much a full 360 turn deeper to be tight. I'm using a simple L allen wrench and only apply the amount of force I can generate with my hand. What the heck? Makes no sense. Suggestions? Maybe grind down the tip of the set screw? Thanks, Karl |

That sounds strange. Something isn't lining up correctly. I would keep trying to adjust things before grinding anything

Is the coupler disconnected or loose from the shift rod?
Maybe with new bushings, your old measurements and stops have changed. The only variable in your description is the installation on the shift rob. Bill K

OK... Maybe I was seeing things. It's in the transmission itself. I clamped the shaft and have no movement after reseating the set screw.
Not sure what a typical rotational movement is, but I have maybe 20 degrees of rotation (about 2 inches at the gearshift knob). Karl |
