early 911 rear drain holes sunroof location

Hello, anybody knows what's inside the rear drainhole of of a sunroof 911 or 912. I want to duplicate it. By the way, I'd like to know the story of this small hole: From when to when and does it exist on Karmann, Zuffenhausen or both???? Thanks for your expertise.... Bye LAURENT

Hi Laurent,

Hopefully I can help you somewhat. Only SWB cars had these drain holes similar to 356 models. This is not shown in the parts book and these drains were rerouted at some point after the 1967 model; Karmann cars come to mind as my 66 had these. Sometime in 1967 this drain holes disappeared. This small slit in the roof above the quarter panel in each side was intended to be a drain hole so inside the roof was a designed water passage for drainage. After 1967 models were introduced the drainage of course no longer existed so instead drainage emptied into the inner rear fender well. So unless your original vehicle came with them don't open holes there unless you want rust inside the metal panels.

Regards,

Jose

Thanks a lot AirJose,
Well that's an answer!!!! My 912 is a '65 without sunroof so I don't have those drainholes but my goal is to weld an OG one on his actual roof. If I want to be period correct, I must drill those small holes (fakes or functionals). Your '66 is a Karmann but have you seen those holes on Zuffenhausen cars because mine is a 35 VIN?
Thanks again AirJose Regards Laurent

Laurent,

I no longer have the 66, it had no sunroof. A lot of owners closed those holes for "updating" these older models. Mine was covered with a "Bondo" type filler and only when I scraped the 5 layers of paint I saw them. No definite answer to your question but it appeared that all coupes had these type of drain holes.

Jose,
That's a good piece of news if my 65 have those holes. I am going to look if I find them beneath the paint. Thanks again Laurent
