Australian Asbestos Examiner on East Coast Needed
I am shipping my 1966 911 Porsche coupe to my daughter in Australia. Australia has a “zero tolerance” for any asbestos. To scare you further, there is a $3,000 fine for every part that the Australian Border Force (ABF) finds with asbestos.
On the West Coast, there are asbestos examiners that certify that there is no asbestos. I have arrangements to ship the car from Linden, NJ to Sydney, NSW, Australia, but I cannot find such an examiner on the east coast. Can anyone assist me in finding an examiner so I don’t have to sweat the inspection. I have been very complete in finding MSDS sheets, speaking to Stoddard, M&K Mufflers, EBS and others, but I would be more comfortable having it certified “asbestos free” before it leaves. Thanks in advance, Tom |

Don't worry. Your car will be fine. they won't be inspecting dust from by gone years around your brake pads. What they are talking about is building materials or quantities in industrial machinery from China.
You could pressure wash or steam clean underneath so it doesn't have any bugs or insects. Edit: I'm a Kiwi but we have a bit to do with Australia. |

Thanks to both of you for replying, you are making me feel better about not being fined. I am trying to get MSDS sheets on brakes, clutch and exhaust gaskets, as well as seam sealers, etc.
Anyone have personal experience with this importing process? |

Hi Tom,
Just wondering how you went with your import... I am looking at doing at bringing an old 911 over and wondering if you had any issues. Cheers Rob |

I had my car shipped here in 2017, it was inspected before it left Long Beach. I wouldn't sniff at this, there are a lot of stories of not only big fines but vehicles being blocked from import by inspectors after asbestos was found. It's not just brake pads, but exhaust gaskets and other such stuff that can be an issue. An inspection before it leaves port didn't cost me much, and received a rubber stamp when the car arrived in Melbourne.

Some early mufflers had an outer metal wrap with asbestos sandwiched inside. Earlyish VWs had asbestos sleeves insulating the heater box outlets to the tubes that passed heat into the car. Wonderful.

My early rock collection included numeros pieces of asbestos. In chemistry class, the teacher tossed out 4 x 4 asbestos Bunsen Burner pads like frisbees, and we never. . .
. . . cough, cough . . . |

Just been through this. Go through the people certified for Australian asbestos testing in LA. Ship your car to Compton and get it done there. Kiwi advice further upthread is inaccurate; destructive car testing and fines have happened. Some hothead in government decided to start testing private imports.
