wiring harness question

Hi,

I am installing a 72 2.4 T MFI motor in my 68 Targa. The engine has a 14 pin wiring harness with female connections. My question is, do I need to find plate/wiring panel off a similar year? to mate it with or should I just cut the harness? My 68 is definetly not setup to receive that harness. Is there any diagram that illustrates the wire assignments in the harness? Sorry, I am bit of a novice here and the manual isn't really helping. . Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

The back of the 14-pin connector pops off. Then you rearrange the pins to match the connector on your relay panel.

Tomorrow I'll look at my factory manuals and give you the changes if someone doesn't before me.

Alan,

Did you get the Bosch CDI-unit & Speed Switch with your engine? Those are the major 'new' items that need to be added to the relay panel. A new panel would be easy, but expensive ... and it stilll would have to be 'grafted' to your existing wiring harness!

The 14-pin connectors are very easy to disassemble and alter, etc. You can get a new male connector kit ... Pelican can probably get them.

Sherwood Lee's [911pcars] website has high-quality scans in PDF format of the '67-'68 911S diagram (L-59) and '70 - '71 diagram (SL-35, identical to '73 with respect to engine wiring) ... that should aid your understanding of the wiring.

My suggestion is to download the three PDF files, print them on high-quality paper & laminate them for protection ... and study them for a while. Then come back to this thread and post any specific questions you come across.

The Pelican diagrams below illustrate the issues ...

Thanks Warren, I will print it out. Can you think of anything else I will need? I already have the CDI box and am looking for a speed switch.

Alan,

You will need a voltage regulator that matches the brand of alternator. You don't have to pull out the fan and alternator ... just check the diameter of the alternator shaft.

Bosch has 14 mm x 1.5 threaded shaft.

SEV Marchal/Motorola has 16 mm x 1.00 threaded shaft.
