Pics of my car with the whale tail on

Finally got my tail back and it looks great. The second body shop I used matched the paint perfectly. As you recall from my previous post, the first shop (Topline Motors, Inc.) really did a ****ty job and would not redo it. The color didn't match, the metallic flake was too big and the clearcoat had more orange peel texture than an orange! The second shop I used (Travelers Auto Body, Inc.) had a paint supply house (Providence Lacquer) come down to their shop with a spectrophotometer gizzmo and it calculated a paint recipe. The match was perfect. I am really happy with the finished product and the 76 turbo whale tail proportionaly looks great on an 911SC. I am looking foward to taking the car to Hershey and mingle with some fellow Pelicanheads.

A 911 with a tail is a beautiful thing.

BTW, what is the ride height on that car? About 24.75" front and 24.25" rear?

Paint matching used to be an art. You had to get the right shop...today it is truly a science. They can match 20 year old paint perfectly with patience and technology...BTW...that is a signature PORSCHE tail! I think it is a landmark defing element in automotive history...

Those are very close to what I recall measuring last fall.

"that is a signature PORSCHE tail" Yeah, it's my favorite tail too.

Thanks for the repiles.

Great looking tail. Not as overbearing as the tea tray turbo tail. Glad the paint worked out.

No kidding! Well said.
John, inspiring post. I have the same tail and have just been dreading dealing with getting it painted to match. It's great to hear it can be done . . .even on the light metallics.

It looks great! But may I ask what tail is it? It's seems to be differnce from my 85' carrera tail, would that be the earlier version of turbo tail?

AndrewWolfeUK,

"How much did the wing cost you to buy?"

I paid $350 for the tail. No shipping cost, I picked it up locally.

eyue,

"But may I ask what tail is it?"

It's a 1976 Turbo Whale Tail replica.

Nice job! Glad you got the color sorted out. That would be the early turbo tail with the secondary grille. The SC's came with a similar tail on the Weissach model without the smaller grille. These tails seem to be fairly rare but I just found out that the rubber for these early tails are no longer produced or reproduced for Porsche or any other after-market parts distributor.

Hi jadams1,

I just bought my SC and it has the same style tail as yours, EXCEPT I don't have the second grille on the wing. I was wondering if your grill was just a mock piece or if it really is a hole that directs more air into the engine compartment. Looks good. Thanks!

Oh, and prepare for a new onslaught of 'tail'gaters.

The secondary grill is functional. I guess the 76 turbos had an auxuillary oil cooler stuffed in the wing under the secondary grill.
How about a pic of your SC?

Imho, that tail looks just right on the SC. It looks lighter (visually) than the Carrera tail. I love the color too!

Funny thing: I helped a friend swap a tail just like that with a Carrera tail. Man, that factory Carrera lid was heavy.

Lookin' good,
