Resolved the Droning from Monty 2 in 2 out Mufflers

Years ago I bought a Monty Muffler from Tasmania Australia. Was not Cheap specially the shipping! I have had this Muffler for over “20” years now and still on Good Condition, But in the 1982 it Drones as we drive along. (Do Not Remember this in the 1976). So looking at all Of my Options, I really found NONE! So I decided to treat the 3” outlets like a Motorcycle Exhaust And Put a Baffle in them. But to Find a Baffle! The Closest I could find was these Mufflers made from 409 Stainless (Never Heard Of 409) and cut the ends off and tap them in. Of course they did not fit so I cut about 1/4” out of the Seam and used Copper antiseize, they fitted real well. Plan to drill and tap a hole for a Safety Bolt. The outside still has a good sound but the car is almost as Quiet as SSTOCK MUFFLER On the Inside! Painted the ends Black with Engine paint. Total cost parts $36.

My main question in my mind was should I recess them more to not be seen or to keep the look. I am able to remove them with a Snatch Hammer and the tubes are Stainless steel wool packed so who knows how long this will last.

You have effectively installed another muffler in the exhaust path. Nice job. Another tactic would be to replace the coffee can sized tailpipe with a more reasonably sized pipe - say 2.5”.

There are also over-the-counter tailpipe inserts that do the same.

A potato in one side or the other would have the same affect on the drone, while probably making more power.

Mr. Sherwood, NOW YOU TELL ME! somehow on he 1976 with a slightly smaller Engine, it did not have this Resonance. From her accident that smashed down one of the Outlets, i straighten them out to be more of an Rectangular Oval And Thought That was the Problem so I bought a tool and Rounded them back to the Original shape. ZERO DIFFERENCE!:(

I never saw anything like what you mentioned. Can you show me a site? Always good to hear from the ”Man Himself”!! Hope you had the Kind Of Christmas you deserve!

BTW, those Heat Shields are a Necessity part of my car Here in Florida!!

I wonder whether a Monty muffler made recently, would work better than the 20 year old one? Change in design perhaps?
If you need a hand shipping, I can help :)

It is even Older Than 20 more like 25! The fact that I have it and in Fairly Good Condition (To Me) makes Monty like the Old Chrysler Corporation! The Engine And Transmission In Them was Soo Good And lasted Soo Long. They almost went out of Business! But the way they Fixed that was to make (K Car) with a Crappy Engine That would not last Hence sell more cars! So for me, (I Think) If Anything Monty would be Making a “LESS” Robust Design so they could keep in Business and sell more Mufflers!

After all, how many people have a Muffler That is still going strong 25 Years later? If I “EVER” Need a New Muffler there is ONLY “1” choice MONTY MUFFLER!!

Vincent,
Here's a page chock full of them. People must traverse the hot rod catalogs more often. Lotsa ***** is applicable to modify or ruin your ride: :)

I have had two Monty mufflers on my two previous 911s and I can concur that they last and last. One was over 20 years old and still perfect. I have only just received a 2 in 2 out from Monty for my current 911 and I can say they are build with the same quality as they were 20 years ago. It is refreshing to buy a product that is hand made without compromise. Pretty rare this day and age.

Mr. Sherwood, I spent a few hours looking at everything Related I could find and Glad I did what I did. The pieces that were like what I bought (Although a lot Prettier) Cost $135 “EACH” and I still would have to slice them to make them fit:(. Also on the low end of the price I saw the little end plates that go into those “4 inch” Loud shells to reduce the Opening to 2 inches, but to really secure them you need at least 2 Bolts and they have no sound Deadener just Reduce the Opening Size did not see any for inside 3 inch. There were a lot of high end electric controlled Baffles that cost as much as a New Muffler. So that site did do one thing for me! Make me more happy with my choice 👍🏾👍🏾
