Help with ignition lock problem
Been having a problem with the ignition switch on my '84 Carrera and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue. From time to time, I'll put the key in the ignition and it will not turn. I hesitate to put too much pressure on it because the Porsche keys are so thin. I have not turned the steering wheel to engage the steering lock, yet the key feels like the wheel is in the locked position. Any ideas?

I have a second key. I'll trying using it for a while and see if it cures the problem.

I don't need to see a picture of the key.
The flags inside the tumbler are all gunked up. Start by spraying a little PB Blaster, or Kroil, or even brake cleaner, on the key - continue to use. Repeat until the key engages correctly. Graphite grease will only make the problem worse. You need something inside the tumbler to start diluting the mounds of gunk. Patience. Bill K |
Good advice, thank you. I'll try the spray method this afternoon.

Keys, tumbler and flags.
Picture yours with 36 years of gunk on each of the 12 flags per cylinder. Bill K http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1577477570.jpg |
Don't use PB blaster in your ignition it contains oils which will attract dirt grime et. Tri flow is a good lock lubricant available at local hardware. If cleaning and tri flow doesn't work pm me I do a lot of locks and have spare cylinders, switches et.

Had that problem for a few years...
The "barrel" was loose and the Lock Out came on. Punch the two rivet and never had it since. Check http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/476908-ignition-switch-springing-problem.html if the second key does not fit the problem. |

PB Blaster contains anywhere from 20-30% petroleum distillate which will dissolve built-up gunk - not attract it. Here's list of what makes up Tri-Flow - a lot more petro (oil) products than PB Blaster. Heavy Naphthenic Petroleum Oil 39.2 64742-52-5 Aliphatic Solvent 23.6 64742-47-8 Propane 10.2 74-98-6 Butane 9.8 106-97-8 Heavy Paraffinic Oil 3.4 64742-65-0 Heavy Naphthenic Petroleum Oil 2.0 64742-52-5 Barium Dinonyl Naphthalene Sulfonate 2.0 25619-56-1 Tetrafluoroethene Polymer 1.3 9002-84-0 Bill K |
