Chicago Spring Fling Complete!

Well gang, the Chicago Chapter made it out for our Spring Run today.

It was a nice showing despite the cold.

Ed, showed up in a white C2 Cab, Jeff in a 74 Carrera, Ahmed in his 76 930 (with new wheels!), Ray in his 77 911S (with a 2.7), Chris in his 930 (Johnny Lightning), Keith in his 69 (?) (with a bleeding 2.2 motor!), Dave with his black C2 which had a sweet sounding exhaust (Ruf!), Kevin in his Eagle Talon Turbo (the 87 Carrera is on jack stands right now..so he says..we think he's trying to infiltrate the ranks! with some Rice)

We later picked up water pumper Chris in his red 924.

(How's this for a bunch of corn eat'n Midwest farmers? )

We even had female company, Esther and Heather!

It turns out that Keith and Ed are related! So we have two Pelican relatives on the board, and they didn't even know it!!! This will lead to some family problems later! You'll see.

So we stopped to fuel up at the start of the ride.

Ray just wouldn't leave without getting a good deal on mulch for his spring garden..so after some debate, Jeff got fed up and offered to pack some in his car ....

Here, Ray is returning to the cars after paying for the mulch, while the guys pack mulch into Jeff/s Carrera.

The first 30 minutes was pretty tamed until we got to the kart track. We just wanted to check the track out. So I go in to the main office to talk to the owner while the guys check the track out and WHAT! You'll let us on the track? Sure. In our cars? Yeah.

It was the best surprise we could have hoped for..running our cars on a twisty 0.5 mile kart course!

Here Ahmed checks his oil while we were hanging around. Nice car eh!

We were led around the track by the owner to start..everyone thought it would just be parade laps..riiight! No one cleaned out their cars like you would for a DE! Let's just say that there were a lot of items sliding around some cars during and after the track runs.

Johnny Lightning Going Around the Track. You should have heard the waste gate when Chris gets Johnny moving! (Jeff in his Carrera is hot on Chris' tail)

Me Trying to be Fast...if I were part of Speed Racer's family, I'd be Chim Chim! Don't worry, I'll be doings some DE's this year (Dave in his black C2 was nice enough not to run me over)

I have video to add in a bit, but first the pictures!

Remember what I said about Keith and Ed being related? Well, while we were standing around the conversation got heated...

Keith: Ed, you can't get that cab around the track in a respectable time!

Ed: You can't, kid!

Keith: Now way man. The karts inside can go faster!

Ed: Well, I'll show you, you punk!

Keith: Keep on wishing..your side of the family are all slow!

So Ed stomps off and with Chris. Chris being the good guy he is offered to follow Ed around the track and radio instructions.

Here Ed comes around the last turn....

Crowd: Turn Ed! Turn! Don't take out the cones or we'll all be tossed out of here!

The people that work there were great ! people. While we were hanging around watching Chris in his 930 and Jeff in his Carrera rip up the track, the owner and a couple of kids rolled out a kart and ask if I want to go around the track in it. Does a monkey like bananas (Chim Chim likes bananas)?!! Hell yes!

So the owner and a kid are warming up the cart while I got suited up with neck pad, helmet, jacket and gloves. They finally get the kart really, and I squeezed into a seat that is half as wide as my butt! I gave it a few blips of the throttle, killed it twice, then nothing! The throttle linkage broke!

(Did I do that?)

They started to get another cart ready, and it looked like more trouble than I wanted to put them through. So I passed because it was getting late. Dave had to leave and we had to get back on the route. (Notice that Dave and his car are not in the pictures above..you'll see and hear Daves wonderful car in the videos)

Those of you who didn't come out for the fun run...sorry boys, but you missed it! The kart track was worth braving the cold.

Oh I almost forgot the best (because it turned out OK..no damage or injuries) part. Remember Ahmed checking his oil? (Sorry dude I have to poke fun at this...I can't resist).

....well, he was so excited to get on the kart track that he forgot the oil cap!!! Left in on the bumper! Guess where it was found...on the track at turn one

Ahmed: Oh! Now I know where the oil filler cap goes?

(Keep in mind Ahmed has only had his car for a few months..so give the guy a break, but it's alright to have fun right? )

Needless to say this was a great ice breaker, and we had ammo with which to poke fun of Ahmed with...and we used it!

Well after the kart track we ran into water pumper Chris (WP Chris) and he joined the party.

As if we didn't have enough warning (!!!), the weather turned bad at that point! MUST HAVE BEEN THE WATER PUMPER JINX! Notice two of 'em.

So we headed toward the twisties!

You can do it Ray! Come on man, we're falling behind!

We made it past the twisty behind a Camary that was going slower than 20/50 oil in sub-zero degree temps!

And what would a road trip be, if we didn't get lost! A closed bridge and some small town confusion and we ended up further west than we wanted to go..might as well have been Colorado with the crappy snow and hail we were getting!

Here we finally stop for directions (The girls insisted of course).

Chris: We just have to go back and take that turn there!

Back we go to get around the closed bridge!

A couple of highway miles and back to the country road.

Jeff should have been driving, not snapping pictures!

Souk: Chris, is this the right exit?

Chris: Yeah!

Souk: Are you sure? The GIRLS are getting hungry! And you got us lost once already"

Well, we turn the wrong way (my fault ) and ended up in some really thick snow. Sorry, my co-pilot was busy..no pictures..others may have one of the blizzard we went through.

Double back and we finally get to the food stop!

After lunch we headed home and took some pictures with all the cars lined up (see above and below).

Remember the BUTT thread? Well, this one is for the Cali guys.

We wanted the girls to stripe down to tongs and bras for a California weather shot, but it was no good..the snow (see white specks!)

Heather and Esther: No way man it's too cold...no bikini shots for you!

Well, if you didn't notice, Keith's car was not in any of the shots....it was left at my house because of a leaking rear seal and a bit too much oil (we've all done it Keith so no worrys man).

So we get home and had to drain some oil out of Keith's car ...see, he does have a car, but where is Keith? Oh, under the car

Well it's small world isn't it. The Gentleman we met was Max Schmidt who drives a Porsche in some IMSA, Grand Am, and ALMS races in an RSR and is working with On The Edge Performance in CO.

Small world really, we're out in the middle of nowhere Illinois in this little drive-in rootbeer place (no girls on rollerskates in the snow) and we run into him there. Apparently he was visiting family.

Interesting coincidence...

Anyway, the drive was spectacular, the little track excursion was just an added bonus... Mind you, no one had to ask me twice to go out on the track, one lap of poking around and Jeff was just right behind me so I though, "okay, we're ON!" and sped off, occasionally looking over at the owner as I went by to gauge his expression. Jeff was still right on me the whole time, what a blast!

We would have shown more skin in the pic, but it was so cold, and well, you know, we wouldn't want anyone assuming that the Chicago representation had any "shortcomings" from 30 degree shrinkage...
