Can a G-50 Trans mate to a 1974 2.7 engine?

or a better question, is a 915 trans worth rebuilding due to the sloppy shifting issues its has? or is going g50 the best option?

It’ll be worth your while to search the forum on this one- the torsion bar tubes are different on g50 cars, to allow for the larger transmission.

Long story short, you’ll be much better off rebuilding your 915, upgrading your linkage parts, and adding a gate shift like the WEVO unit

I did a light search and not to much came up. So the 915 trans can be made to feel like a modern trans? I have a chance to buy a 1974 2.7 engine and trans for $6,000, but don't want to put money into a lemon only to come up with sour lemonade. Sound like a good deal to you?

No, the 915 cannot be made to feel like a modern transmission. It's not a modern transmission that uses a balk ring synchro system.

Don't waste money on the WEVO gate shift or whatever it is called. Just get the WEVO shifter, side cover, etc. Then make sure the plastic bushing in the shift linkage are replaced and that the coupler bushing are replaced. Or, replace the coupler with the WEVO coupler.

A g50 swap done right is a 8-10K proposition. There's not a huge advantage to paring that with a 2.7. If you had a 3.6 or a 3.8, then absolutely. Even for a 3.2 or 3.4 in my case I'd go with a sorted 915. They need a little TLC and they are great. As others have said, the gate shift isn't necessary. The WEVO shifter or Rennshift is an excellent upgrade. Paired with new mounts, refreshed coupler, and someone who knows wtf they are doing in adjusting the actual shifter will go a long way.

Requires an engine with a 9 bolt crankshaft to fit the G50 clutch assembly. 2.7 is 6 bolt.

So I have a great rolling shell with no drive train. I want a 3.6 with G-50 but the prices for used drive trains are at least $20-25k when said and done. (Not rebuilt) This 2.7 drive train fell in my lap and I'm not sure if its worth it. I would still have to put in 10k for rebuild and I'm not sure if in the end I will regret the setup. Not wanting to track race, yet I will push the car as every honorable Porsche driver should.

Duane’s number is low. Budget $12-15k to do a G50 conversion. Rebuild your 915.

I have a 75 with a 2.7. I rebuilt the engine in the early 90's, case savers, and so on. Set it up with carbs to the rs specs, hated it, very fussy. Changed back to the cis and enjoyed it trouble free until now. Will probably open her up as she is leaking some oil that I'm afraid is in serious areas. But drove her 30 years no problem, just fixed the original issues and with the lighter body moves along nicely. Any porsche engine costs an arm and leg to rebuild, but can last a long time.

Ocean If I was you I would look for a 3.0 complete. The aluminum case is better and it's the cheapest of the 78-89 motors. Stay air cooled Porsche, you'll thank us later. They come up here occasionally for a decent price, or do a WTB. There was also a solid looking 915 for sale not too long ago that would pair nicely. Get to know your local enthusiasts, they find deals and keep a bead on the market.
