Dash Replacement Question
 
I have a new dash I just obtained to replace my badly warped and cracked one. It’s a Stoddard. It’s the right part number for my 83 SC. However I’m noticing there are no fasteners at the windshield edge. Also, it only has studs, I thought the SC dashes had both studs and plastic clips. I’m also having a hard time understanding why the windshield comes out if it doesn’t have any fasteners at the perimeter. What am I missing here.

The windshield has to come out to remove the original dash installed at the factory. If the dash purchased is NOT specific to the SC, then perhaps it is not designed with the fasteners for the front edge.

can you show a photo of the at windshield fasten points for the old and new dash? as I recall you can look from the outside and see a hint of the screws that hold the dash in place if you've not removed the cracked one yet.

Here's dash from '80 SC. As far as I know it's original to car. Yellow arrows point to push-in, white to studs, and black to holes in covering where screws go through into metal sub-dash.

I see Stoddard also sells replacement vinyl kits for dashes. Has anyone ever done one of their own?

Hmmm...maybe I need to reuse my plastic fasteners and glue them on. I’ll take a closer look. Thanks for the photo.

I replace the dash in our 75 911. Did not fit well, the speaker area was a mess. This was a unit supplied by our host. To do over I would spend a lot of time fixing the original, it fit but had some rust, etc. Anyway for the $1500 plus, thats where I would go, experience and hindsight.

The white plastic fasteners twist into the dash pad. I would get new ones and a couple extras (you’re bound to break one getting the dash back into place). From what I have seen, the black screws on the windshield edge are not consistent in number or possibly placement. You might just have to line those up best as possible once pad is in place and screw them through the vinyl. Don’t forget the black grommets.

Started removing dash today. I tried the 3 nuts on the passenger side as they seemed the easiest to get to and good starting point. 1 of 3 came off. The other two are seized and are just spinning with the stud.

I thought the book said they would be finger tight. [emoji15]

Luckily I’m not reusing the dash as I think it’s going to be a destructive removal.

Any ideas of how to get at the studs? I’m thinking of cutting the vinyl with a razor on the front to get to the stud.

I'm assuming you already have the window out? if the studs spin they are likely to to just pull out of the dash. Remove the window, remove the screws at the forward edge of the dash, remove all the nuts that will come off the mounting studs, then pry the forward section of the dash with the plastic mounting clips up to disengage them. Now for any studs which spun, basically they are a stud attached to a thin plate (square) that is twisted into location (square hole, plate is rotated 45 degrees) on the dash and when they spin, you can typically pull on the dash while some one turns the nut/stud and they will disconnect from the dash frame. But you need to have the dash at a point where it can move/flex away from the stud mount.

I have 3 nuts that are just spinning on the stud. The stud is not rotating as I thought. Im not sure why the nut is just spinning and won’t come off. Maybe cross threaded?

I’ve started ripping up the dash so I can access them through the holes in the top of the steel under the dash pad. I’m trying to cut them off with a Dremel but it’s proving to be challenging.

Any other ideas.

It’s the one all the way on the passenger side, the one on the passenger side of the front vent and the one next to that. So luckily access is not too bad.
