How to spill 4 quarts of hot oil without trying!!!!!!!!!!

Well I get the bone head of the year award for this one. I got my spankin new 14 qt. oil pan just for the occassion. You guys no...the one that is a combination resevoir and catch funnel. Well I get the car up to operating temperature and then pull it into the garage. I get my 15 mm wrench and remove the drain plug from the oil tank. Talk about hot and fast running. In my effort to get my hands out of the way I drop the plug into the pan. I am laying there watching it pour out like a mofo. Then I realize the tappered catch area is starting to fill up faster than it is going into the tank. The plug that I dropped is blocking the hole to the catch tank. The oil is hot as hell and I am trying to fish the plug out of the hole while puddle is pooling on the floor. Finally the puddle has forced me away. I just sit back and watch the balance of the oil overflow and drain on the ground. Clean up was a major pain but the whole thing made me :D
I was spoiled by the 5 qt oil change with the huge opening with the screen that caught the oil plug. Now I know better. Matthew

I modify mine by drilling a bunch of 1/4" holes all over the surface of the 'funnel' so the oil has multiple places to go. Works like a champ, except if you drop it or set it down roughly, those holes work like a shower head to spray you wil oil.

Thom...This is the type of catch pan that doubles as the storage tank for carry to oil disposal depot.

I've done that. Got my brand spankin new mechanics gloves soaked in hot oil.

The glove was easier to clean than the floor though.

The first time I used mine I forgot to remove the vent plug - pretty much same result.

Adman 04-03-2003 02:58 PM

Don....I was so proud of myself for not forgetting to open the vent hole. I patted myself on the back too soon...LOL...:D

Wait till you do it a second time, and realize that even with the drain plug not obstructing the drain hole the oil still flows faster that the inlet permits. I ended up with 5 qts of hot oil all over the place twice before I realized the only pan that will catch the quanity of oil dumped by a P-car is a large antifreeze drain pan.

pbs911...Well thats disappointing to hear. I am going to take your word for it. :( Matthew

In theory. In real life, a 911 pours the oil out too fast for these to handle. You could get one of those ball valves for your oil tank, and then let the oil drain out slowly. Dunno what you can do about the crankcase, though.

So from what you guys are saying you have to have a catch pan and a separate container for carry to disposal. Oh the good old days when we use to pull the car up over the storm drain and let her rip. Not that it was ever a good idea or that I every did it that way.;) Matthew

BTDT:

If you get the oil flow to go right into the hole, its fine.

Yes, the vent needs to be open also;)

The drain pan I use also serves to transport the oil to the recycle place but I do not have the problems you are describing. I call it a "five gallon bucket." Five gallons also happens to be the recycling limit, per trip.

ha ha....I had that Day Two on the side of the road! I was not aware of how to check the oil level in my new car...and so I added a few extra quarts when I did check it. Thanks to my error...I had the chance to learn the hard way!!!

Don't feel bad. Anyone who says that they didn't do the same thing is lying. Consider yourself christened into Porschehood!

Been there...done that! Not once, but twice.

Welcome to the Porsche experience. I love it.

You will have to modify things because this car is unlike none other. There are certain sequences you will have to learn, kinda like line dancing. There are other things you will have to change. You will probably never see this much hot oil out of a car in one oil change.

I have seen a garage floor become a skating rink with hot oil before. You sound like you're really going to like this.

BTW, there are a lot of ways to clean up oil stains.

Good luck,
David Duffield

It's too late for this suggestion now but..

go out and buy one of the flexible magnets. Mine is about 2' long and I can't tell you how many times I've used it to fish nuts and bolts out of difficult places, including my oil drain pan.

David...I really am enjoying the Porsche experience. I have spent the past 7 years playing with C5 Corvettes. Spent a lot of time wrenching on the LS1 small block and suspension system. The vette actually got boring. I still hang with all my vette buddies but run with my Carrera. We autocrossed this weekend and what a blast. I was beat by all the guys that were use to me whipping up on them. I was running 1:07 to their 1:00. I have never had more fun driving a car and getting my butt beat than I did in my Porsche. I could have run a 1:07 in the vette while drinking a diet coke and messing with the radio. I was working my butt off having the best time in the Porsche and all my buds enjoyed watching me slide it around the track. I am all excited about working on and playing with cars again:D Matthew

Where's the HAZMAT team? Did you report this to your government? You know you are in violation of some US Code somewhere. Shame , shame, shame.

I bought the same type container. First use, you guessed it, the oil comes out of the tank MUCH faster than it flows into the container through the plug hole. I took a utility knife and cut the entire funnel portion of the container off. I never did intend to store used oil in it any way. That's what empty milk jugs and windshield washer jugs are for!
