Simple diy piston squirter removal and replacement

My motor has been sitting for 17 years so i figured the squirters needed to be removed so i can be 100 percent sure the oil journals are totally clean and there is nothing hiding behind them . after reading some threads on the removal procedure i thought i would outline and simplify the procedure that worked well for me and offer up my diy puller to anyone who wants it, as i won’t be using them again any time in the near future and if i do i can weld one up in just a few minutes.

#1 carefully drill out the 3 crush tabs holding the pressed squirter in place a dremell or a 6mm end mill works great

#2 drill out the orifice plate on the top of the squirter .This cap will spin so you need to use small bits and work your way up to a 5mm bit . The cap seemed to fall out and end up on the drill bit by the time you got to the 4 or 4.5 mm bit

#3 once cap is removed use a pick ( i used a dental pick) to remove the spring then tip over the case to remove the ball bearing.. while upside down break clean the area to remove any chips. ( don’t want to force anything into the journal )

#4 use a #12-24 tap ( #12 tap not a 12mm) to thread the squirter jacket the jacket has an ID of 5mm and an OD or 6 mm . the 12-24 tap has an od of 5.54mm The #12-24 tap perfect size and easily cut straight and won't interfere with the case .

#5 flip case and break clean out the chip screw in 12/24 threaded rod you can order online or just weld a 12-24 screw to a 8 or 10 inch piece 3/8 threaded rod and back nut it and use your largest 1/2 inch socket to make a slam puller . slowly reverse the squirter up and out by back tapping the socket on the nut. don't use the tap to pull the squirter out as there is no flex if it breaks you will be in trouble .. once out break clean while upside down.

this method allows you to see wat is hiding behind your squirters . in 4 of my 6 squirters i has thin onion skin looking black brown old school engine sealant .

all six of my squirters came out very easily with minimal taps on the slam puller .

i plan on using the cleanable squirters as i like the idea of installing the squirter jackets first then cleaning and installing the ball spring and then the orifice. no hidden surprises .. as mentioned if anyone want my pullers you can have then just cover shipping.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1579701635.jpg
