1980 911SC Smog / Emissions Equipment

Hey All:

From my research on here, it appears that the 1980 SC had only the following smog (or emissions) equipment: (1) catalytic converter, single; (2) O2 / Lambda sensor; and (3) smog pump.

No EGR.

Is this correct?

Bonus points for California-specific information.

Extra bonus points if anyone has a setup, complete or partial, that I could buy (or borrow).

Thanks in advance!

In the US, 1980 was the first year without the smog pump.

Thanks, Mark. That is a big help.

Am I correct that the 1980 911SC did not have an EGR?

I have a 1979 California SC with an EGR. Its a real PITA because it blocks you from getting the header off the back right cylinder, and it loops around under your airbox and has a special hole into the airbox.

You can see it back here: EGR: Where is it? 1979 SC (not my car).

Thank god I'm in WI and don't have emissions testing or inspection on older classics. I'm not sure what changed with 1980.

Not sure about EGR. I have a 1979 without EGR, but in 1979 there were 49-state cars and California cars. In 1980 there was just one USA version, so I believe EGR and air pumps all went away.

See here: Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site

Check the Porsche PET catalog. https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/

As another data point my 83 SC does not have an EGR and has a Lambda system.

I have a 79 SC I am redoing. Have stripped off all the smog equipment including the cat with no intention of future use. Car was running just fine and pump was pumping when I took off but I never needed to pass an emissions inspection. I will sell mine. Send me a message if you are interested.

You also need intact hosing from the charcoal canister to the fuel tank vent

Thanks for the heads up. This is a new one on me.

Does anyone know if the 930/09 engine has a charcoal canister and connections to run the hosing between the canister and tank as standard?

1980 911 SC Euro Spec

Hey guys.. I am new to the Porsche world ( kinda ) I had a 2005 a few years back but really love the SC models and looking at one I am interested in. It's a 1980 that was purchased new in Germany and brought to the states. I am in California so I have to worry about smog issues.

Can anyone help me if it's a big issue to get it to pass in California? Or what what need to be done for it to pass and about at what cost? I would really appreciate the feedback from anyone who has had to do this or really knows this year and car.

Thanks!!

Has the car ever been registered in CA? If not, it can be very difficult to register in CA, possibly not worth the hassle.

If currently registered in CA, no problem. Just make sure the seller provides a current smog cert.

My 1980SC has the catalytic converter and O2 sensor...I did get a fail one year because the charcoal canister hose had a crack. She did pass this year again but in all honesty I've had the car a long time and don't usually have a lot of issues passing. Stock 3.0

I had to go to the smog referee in California because a bought a 76 912E with a 3.2 . Referee didn’t know what to do with it , I new more about it than he did . Ended up having to come back a second time after he did research . I did know already that I had to put a cat on it . Other than that it needed nothing else. Smoged at ref station passed clean . I was told by local shops just go to the ref first instead of trying to guess what it needs. .it was helpful to know a little bit about it to direct the ref where equipment is located on car .
