Help identifying this distributor cap
This cap came as a spare when I bought a 2.6 twin plug motor about 15 years ago.
I’ve had it sitting on a shelf since. Does anyone know if this is an authentic Porsche cap or something modified and originally for a jaguar or Lamborghini? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1580707944.jpg |

It's a Magnetti Marelli. A manufacturer, like Beru, Bosch, NGK and so on.
|
Still hoping for assistance on identifying if this is an authentic Porsche cap.
|
No it's not. It's a Marrelli, Italian made part. Porsche used them and Bosch distributors. My link shows it's quite pricey if in good condition.
|
So your saying this may be an authentic RSR cap? But at the same time it’s not a Porsche or supplied part? I’m confused. Please explain. I also don’t see any reason to assume this caps origin is defined based on that distributor assembly in your link.
|
Porsche itself does and did not make these parts themselves, nor were these stamped "Porsche". They were ordered by Porsche to be made for them.
the general manufacturers for such orders were (and still are): Bosch, Magnetti marelli, BERU, Pierburg, NGK and so on. Same for Sparkplugs, Headlights… quite common in the automotive industry, back then and today. |

I am just trying to establish what models (if any) may have come "OEM equipped" with this cap from the factory. Maybe my initial request was not as clear as it should have been. I have done research on twin plug caps and have found that a Jaguar V12 cap as well as the Lamborghini flat 12 cap can be modified for use on a vintage Porsche application because the original caps that came with such cars as the RSR are worth $2000+ in used condition. I would like to know if mine is one of those. Here is a link with pictures but no info Twin plug pictures |
It was an oem part.....think tires, Chevy doesn't make tires, Goodyear does....
|
This can’t be for real. Lol.

Not 100% sure, but it looks like the MM cap used by JB Racing for their twin plug distributor.
The original MM parts are NLA, but there are usually some new versions available at places like Amazon.com. For example, https://www.amazon.com/Facet-2-8210PHT-Distributor-Caps/dp/B00DZMTASI/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Distributor+Cap+jaguar+xj12&qi d=1581045716&s=automotive&sr=1-5 I think the application is Jag XJ12 There are some PP threads on these. All of the current versions are likely made in the same factory and sold under brand names like Facet and Beck Arnley |

I guess no one can tell for sure, but it's highly probable. At least it would be the type/kind they would have used. |
I'm somewhat perplexed by this whole thread.
Here's what I see: We have clearly shown Porsche doesn't make or brand every part of every car, Sigla glass, Bosch lenses and electrical parts, various tires and battery manufacturers, seats and so much more. So, O.P. states he has this cap that could be extremely valuable, even if just to be used on a flat-6 powered race car that is being displayed, or any flat 6 powered car with twin-plug, 911R, RSR, etc And, the conversation keeps coming back to parts that aren't/weren't made by Porsche. So, if I had a set of Bosch 904 tail light lenses, or a set of vintage Pirelli tires that belonged on one of our cars and was still usable, even just for static display, wouldn't these parts be more valuable than a modern part that would fit the car, but not be exactly correct. So, we don't have a single answer to the question 'is this part old and correct, or a newer recreation of the MM distributor cap?' |

Bluecille gets it. Finally someone is on the right page.
|
Are you that dim? You buy a cap that fits the dizzy that runs your motor. Unless it's made by those morons at URO, it will work. If it is NLA or too pricey, you replace the the dizzy and move on.

Many have answered your original question, the thread is rated one star.....what else do you want to know?
Do you want to use it, sell it or use it as an ash tray? |
I am trying to establish if this cap is a valuable piece of Porsche history or just a part modified to work for a Porsche twin plug application.
Who actually manufactured the part is irrelevant. Bluecille is the only one that understands my question. Here is an example. I have a set of 1972 911S sport seats (Recaro made them for Porsche). They came with the car when I purchased it a few years ago. Then I come on this forum to ask if they are authentic Porsche sport seats. If you wanted to get silly you could say "Porsche didn't make those" "Not Porsche parts". And you would be correct but at the same time you will have completely missed the question. If the seats were OE supplied by Porsche and on the cars order sheet when purchased new but made by Recaro then on paper I suppose they are not real Porsche sport seats? Now consider that aftermarket companies now produce replicas of early sport seats. Do the replica sport seats have the same collectors value? This distributor cap I have here has been sitting unused for about 12 years and doing me no good. I plan to put it for sale and would like to know if its an authentic OE supplied 45 year old part with substantial value or just a mass produced cap that can be used as a cheap replacement alternative? |
