First AutoX - Need a number
 

So I'm getting ready to enter my first AutoX and I'm told I need to get a magnetic number for my car. I called a sign shop and they want $100. There must be an easier way. Help.

My first few time trials I used contact paper and cut out the numbers. It stays on OK and peels right off when you're done.

Go to a craft shop and buy bulk magnetic material. Print out large numbers from your computer and use them as a stencil to cut out your numbers.

I like 6 and a 9 that are flippable. That way you can be 6, 9, 66, 69, 96, or 99.

If you must use magnets, you can find the thin ones in fairly large sheets (and multiple colors) at most major arts/crafts type stores (Ben Franklin, etc.). Simply cut out your number(s), and stick them on. Couldn't cost more than $10. However, the downside to magnets is the potential for scratching your paint. You might be better off going with some "static-cling" vinyl decals to put on your rear quarter window(s). Just my $.02

I would avoid the thin magnetic sheets because they'll blow off the car (ask me how I know). Use the thick stuff, or buy off the Internet. There are some vendors that sell by the number for about $5 to $8 per number. I can't recall the names, but a Google search should turn them up.

What about the class letters? I looked up the SCCA classes and for a stock 911 it shows "BS." So I guess I need two numbers and two letters?

If there is a Home Depot:mad: :mad: near you, go to the aisle where they have mailboxes, street numbers, for sale signs etc. They sell packs of 5in tall peel and stick vinyl numbers..

I've seen many folks use tape to make the number and class designation on the side of the car. Not sure why magnetic would be mandatory.

And what is wrong with the (traditional) use of white shoe polish? :confused:

Solotime! That's the name of the company that sells magnetic numbers. There are others, but that's the only name I remember.

shoe polish on a p-car? how pedestrian! just kidding, thats all my car has ever seen for the last five years...

You didn't mention what group you are competing with, but SCCA requires that the numbers be at least 8" high. Keep that in mind when you are ordering.

And, don't use the thin magnets that you can get from a craft store. They will blow off when you get some speed going.

$20 for a set is a great price. And, he has a 911.

white shoe polish on your side windows and on the top corner of your windscreen should be OK for starters.

You can also use it on your tires to set up your pressures.
