911 Insulation Engine Compartment -Sound Proofing
Have an '86 911 Coupe (3.2L). The Insulation Engine Compartment - (Sound Proofing) has rotted and is falling apart. A local Porsche repair shop told me the engine would have to be dropped to replace it. However, if you look at the Pelican Customer Reviews, there are comments that indicate engine removal is not necessary... comments like:
- Looks good, did not have to remove engine. Took about 30 mins. - Perfect fit. Just be sure to give yourself a couple of hours for the job. - Removed old mat (33 years old). Used spray adhesive and mat went in in about 20 minutes. Looks great and fit perfect. Did not have to drop engine. So can anyone provide the "truth" behind this removal and replace, and is it possible to do without dropping the engine? |

So easy with the engine out, but not needed by any means.

I did mine with a partial engine drop. Made the job pretty easy.

I have an 89 and the pad was starting to come apart or at least sagging pretty good, I installed the PadKeeper (no association) which was very easy and everything looks great

Consider Cascade Audio Engineering VB-TSM:
VB-TSM is a sound absorber, blocker and thermal control material all in one! If I recall correctly, the Porsche barrier is just foam with no MLV or radiant barrier. PadKeeper keeps things looking tidy. Another option is to dip/coat the edges in PlastiDip. |

You can easily install with the engine in place, but it helps a lot if you remove the air filter box and heater blower motor. They are easy to do; don’t be too intimidated. Use some spray adhesive as mentioned above on install of the pad. The new one should last another 25+ years.

Special thanks to david482. I searched "Padkeeper" and found the business owner in Colorado, and contacted him re: it. Padkeeper price is a little steep, but it seems like an easy fix / solution. Seller seems to have a lot of satisfied customers.
