Tmp oil cooler help!
 

So I just sent my engine oil cooler into Pacific Oil Coolers and after checking it out they have told me it's leaking beyond repair. So.... I need a new cooler. :mad:

Our host sells:

• PORSCHE: $1255
• TMP (Aftermarket): $495

I had anticipated having to do this and am already past my winter budget. I can stretch to the TMP but am worried it may not be up to the task based on the huge cost difference.

Does anyone have experience with the TMP Oil Cooler? Is it ok or are there other/better options for me out there?

I'd find a good used one in the classifieds. Make sure it didn't come off a blown motor. Looks like William Knight may have another one here:

For that price, does it make more sense to go with an aftermarket Mocal unit?

I have a Mocal on my 79, but it was installed by the previous owner.

It's the engine oil cooler but thanks - when I get to this project I'll take a look at that.

So after a day of research I found my options to be buying new (I have found a suppler for original Porsche Part $940) or buying used and tested for $450. There are 2 camps on this. My mechanic and others say don't install a used oil cooler. Funnily enough those selling the used ones say spending $1k to buy new is a waste of money.

What would you do?

Last time I needed a cooler I bought used and sent it to Pacific Oil Cooler for cleaning and testing.

I would not pay a ludicrous price like that for such a simple heat exchanger on principle - Porsche really is FOS when it comes to parts costs sometimes. I would do as the guy above posted - buy used and send to POC for testing and cleaning.

I bought a used one many years ago. No problems with it since.

In the last couple of years I’ve had some remarkable success with ordering parts from my local Porsche dealer. Sometimes they are significantly less and there are no shipping costs. They give me a PCA discount and sometimes the parts guy has some flexibility. He also knows I’m a repeat customer. Just throwing that out there in case you buy new. I have to drive there to pick them up but that’s no biggie.

You could run one of the various 993 consoles and dispense with the engine oil cooler altogether. Lots of info out there.

As others suggest, buy a used cooler, but with return privileges should an official leak inspection doesn’t pass. That would be ideal. Save the cleaning costs for a structurally sound cooler.

That’s what I’ve been doing. Eliminate the on-engine cooler and go big on the front cooler where it works better anyway. Then you have more air to cool the cylinders.

Going to do any heavy traffic drives? Oil coolers need air flow to work and at low vehicle speeds, there will be nil oil cooling w/o a fan. YMMV.

Not discouraging the internal cooler BUT:

Thermostatic or on-off switch fans can be installed with most any oil cooler. I have one on my Elephant Racing passenger-side setup.

Center-front mounted coolers usually don’t have space for a fan unless chassis sheet metal is modified. And there’s limited space under the front fender for a large cooler to make up for deleting the engine cooler.

Twin left and right front fender-mount coolers is an option and mandatory for larger displacement/modified engines.

Your driving environment plays a large role in the amount of cooling needed.

I think Efren (aka Blackbyrd on here and efrenporsche on IG) has clean tested coolers in stock for reasonable prices.

Mine are all 914-6’s so plenty of room for a big front cooler and fan.
