installing Fire System - nozzle placement advice
 

All,

im installing the Stroud 5lb fire system and plan on putting a nozzle on me in the car and 2 in the engine bay.

the question is, do the nozzles go under the sheet metal or above or both?

i can see if some gas spills it will most likely catch fire from below the sheet metal on the heat exchangers,

another option would be to put all 3 in the engine bay, one above and two below facing the heat exchangers and just get a hand held exchanger for me on the inside.

Any advice here?

on my race car (late model stock car) they are up high.
if you put it under the sheet metal then if the fire is above it wont help.

I think wiring is a bigger fire hazard. Porsche wiring is not that great.
my car actually had very minor fire damage from the front condenser fan burning up.

I assume this is NOT a race car.

this is in fact for my race car im prepping for the 911 Cup class with PCA.

i think ill end up with a nozzle on me with 2 above the sheet metal in the engine.

for some reason, we dont have a whole lot showing up in the search on this topic.

when you say Cup Class is that with a water cooled cup car or is it a class with the 78 in your sig? if it's the 78, which mentioning engine tin would seem to indicate what fuel delivery system are you running? carbs, EFI or the stock CIS for the class?

There is some info on the PCA website under racing...but, to answer for my 78, it's built to Euro SC specs for PCA E Stock with 9.8:1 compression, stock cams and CIS, and would run at 2702 lbs. For the 911 Cup, E cars can drop 150 lbs.

I think stock D can run with carbs on the lower compression.

And the 911 Cup is air-cooled...sorry for any confusion. New class for classic 911s

I have two in the frunk aimed at the fuel cell, two in the dash pointed at driver and passenger midsection and two the the horizontal rear fire wall pointed at the top of the engine.

And a large fire suppressant tank for those six nozzles, right?

i looked at a 911 racecar years ago.
it did not have any engine tin around the engine.

I will have to kook again by I think my late model only has one nozzle on the engine, one at the fuel cell and I would have to check for the driver.
not sure if one is needed there.

I believe I have a 5lb bottle.
this is an old car so I don't know what the new ones have.

I keep forgetting to look but I don't think I have one on the driver.

You want them above the sheetmetal, I would put two nozzles each pointed at the fuel rails or carbs. I also carry a small handheld extinguisher. Because once you pull the handle and jump out you may need a way of putting things out that the system didn't get (oil flare ups on headers, etc).

A hand held is useful for dealing with a fire in some one else's car.

and when the cornerworkers are equipped with empty extinguishers......:eek:
