Porsche Crest Major Porsche Racing Announcement in 6 months?

Ok guys, take this with a grain of Salt...
BUT-

I was talking with one of the PCNA managers at the Cleveland Auto Show about business in general, sales, etc.

He said catagorically that there WILL be a MAJOR announcement from Porsche re-entering a major racing series (he would not mention which one when pressed) in the next six months.

He also said development has already begun on this and that the issue barring an announcement so far are war worries.

No more info than that.

Lets hope!

Chuck

In all seriousness....what concerns me is that Porsche is long associated with sports car racing , and the world state of sports car racing is in shambles right now...AND.... what would a 17th victory at LeMans prove to the world? ( well..*I* would like it !)....
So..the question is...which venue? I hope not Indy style racing...

Who has a list of Lemans winners since the race began? I looked on line and couldn't find a comprehensive list.

That would be nice..but as a total tally...Porsche is heads and shoulders above the rest:
Porsche- 16 wins
Ferrari - 8, I believe
Jag - 5

etc....

I would expect any announcements to come just after Alwin Springer retires in August/September or maybe at the Petit Lemans in October.

Sorry, but Formula One is so boring and so far away from our street cars. Why should Porsche go into that?

Huh?? How do you figure. Sebring has 62 entries. Bentley is coming as well as a slew of various GT makes to name a few. I think it's quite the opposite. ALMS has turned sportscar racing around in this country. Sebring had a 120,000 spectator gate last year!! I hardly call that a shambles. F1 for instance has teams going bankrupt and all the controversy regarding Ferrari etc.

Cheers, James

Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.

I dont think F1 is at all boring - but Im sure there are those who see NASCAR as exciting. In any event, Ferrari's dominence in Formula 1 hasnt hurt their street car sales one bit.

Porsche = racing heritage. Nothing wrong with expanding that heritage IMHO.

James:
Don't confuse facts with enthusiasm...I love Sebring as much as I love Watkins Glen, LeMans, etc....especially during the halycon days goneby. Having 917's run against 512's was quite the ticket. In those days, F1 and FIA-sanctioned sports car racing were *both* pinnacle series....fairly equal, and garnered similar status and crowds.
Today, sportscar racing, with its extreme fragmentation ( ALMS, vs Daytona prototypes vs ??)...with no "single" world-wide organizing body...and the further problem of not knowing whether to offer a low $ series to wow the spectators ( a la NASCAR)..or instead to run with high tech rules ( like the old Group C cars)...has left this part of the sport in shambles. I saw Daytona 24 hrs on TV...and there were more people in the pits than in the stands....c'mon !

I agree that Daytona(I was pit crewing for a team there) is a bit of mess but ALMS is much better. Look at the Sebring entry list for confirmation. 8 different makes represented in LMP 900 alone!! 30 cars in GT....Doesn't get any better. The older fields were not this diverse.

Cheers, James

In my opinion the ALMS has the right formula.I was at Sebring last year and I believe the total attendance was well over 150,000 for the week.Keep in mind that the ALMS has been around for aprox. 5-6 years I believe.I too would want only 1 strong sports car series but the Rolex series is too close to the Nascar cookie cutter approach for me!!

Guys:

GSpreeman....20 Porsche wins for Lemans cannot be correct....
It might be 20 if we include class wins.....
There were 16 *overall, outright* wins for Porsche...the first in 1970...

Oldsmobile also never won Lemans...at least not *outright* wins!

As a matter of fact, where *did* you get that list? I see a number of errors.

As to ALMS being the right formula...let's hope so. I was only saying that there was *one* , premier, top-level, sports car World Manufacturer's Championship series through the late 60's and 70's...and at that time held status like F1. The cars even had similar technology and speed ( often more speed ...like 917 times), than their F1 counterparts. That isn't so today with sportscar rules and series fragmented the way it is. Whether you believe ALMS or Daytona Prototypes ( DP) is the way to go...they currently do not enjoy the success, exposure, funding, and esteem of F1. Don't get me wrong..I wish it were so...and maybe it'll get much better as evidenced by recent ALMS entries like at Sebring...but it is not at F1 levels.

I agree that Porsche should get more into racing, but I would really like to see them knock Ferrari off of the F1 mountain they have. As for racing in "flux" right now; for sure, I think Dayton Protoypes are stupid, but I like that CART took away traction control (see how many spins and losses of control there was in the last race ), I always believe there are good and bad decisions, moves, ventures in motor racing, but I do think )other than the Cayenne) a return or more investment by Porsche in any form of the sport should be great.

Nostatic, you read my mind. I watch 2 full hours of WRC last night. It was a great racing at Turkey and a lot of cars broke down because of the harsh condition. It'll be nice to test Porsche's durability against other hot teams. Is it possible to have mid-engine w/ 4 wheel drive? Can't think of any example?
