Metal Prep and painting questions
Hey guys I have a few questions for those of you that paint. I am painting the bed of my truck and thus far have managed to sand the tailgate and fenders to bare metal. I applied a Metal Prep to the bare metal and it turned it a yellow color. I am told that the yellowing is actually etching? Now for the questions.
1. Is it best to apply the body filler directly to the metal or should I primer first and then apply the filler on top of the primer (that is what it said to do in a book I have). 2. I am using a etch primer I think PPG dX 171 as the base and then I am going to use K36 as the sandable primer on top of that. Do I need a Sealer on top of the K36? and if so is it just a epoxy primer with sealing agents? 3. Is a PPG acrylic enamel a good paint for a first time painter? Do I need a fish eye reducer in the paint? Thanks for Helping out. rc |

1. You can do either. Just make sure that if you put it over bare metal. that it is roughed up good with 80 grit and real clean.
2. I'll pass on that one. 3. Acrylic enamels are user friendly. Make sure you follow mixing instructions for your type of gun. Fish eye is always a good idea. |

1- Plastic body filler can be used on top of epoxy primer or bare metal DO NOT USE IT ON TOP OF ETCHING PRIMER!
2- You do not have to use a sealer on top of urethane primer surfacer if there is no breakthrough of the surfacer and it is sanded with the correct grit. 3- Acrylic Enamel is old school try a urethane in the PPG line Concept. Stay away from fisheye elimator if you can. 4- The bedliner suggestion was a good one. Morton makes a DYI system. Good Luck, Bryan
