Successful day at track with new engine

We did it!

We got to Gingerman raceway about 12:00 and had the car checked and ready to go by 12:30 (getting efficient at this thing).

Warmed the car up, last check, and off we go. I was pretty tenative the first lap (or so I thought!) and ended up just nicking my previous lap record there. 1:36.1

The second session I beat it by a full two seconds! I know there is more there. It was 32 degrees and I was on 12 month old very used Kumhos... Once I get new rubber and a warm track, I figure an extra second or two is there somewhere!!!

The car ran flawlessly. Esther shot some video externally and the sound from the car is just jaw dropping. I'm working hard to get some shots posted, but having problems with my converter...

THe track was full of a bunch of BMW yahoos, some of which wouldn't know a racing line from a ball of yarn, three red flagged sessions in just the afternoon alone!

Still had a great time, no major issues, hopefully the season is as untroublesome as this day!

Okay...

Well here is a short series of clips. The file is huge, 20MB because my video compressor won't work. Sorry.

But enjoy!

Glad to hear everything went well.

I can't wait to get my newly built(still building, this may take a while) car on the track.

That's excellent news!

Car seems a little out of place amongst all those luxury cruisers. Some of 'em looked like they had their windows rolled up!

Even with the windows up, I have to think they could hear you coming (albeit in quite a hurry).

Fun? Can't begin to describe it!

As far as LOUD goes, I hadn't realized untill I watched the video Esther shot... I'm now wondering if I'll pass the noise regs at Blackhawk!

Dennis, We'll be there again May 2-4 for a race and BigBore Enduro..

Chris, Congratulations!!!!! I'm glad you decided to brave the weather. I was in the middle of rebuilding my last caliper about the time you hit the track.

The car looks great but I'm at the office and I can't turn up the volume...people think I 'm nuts here anyway, can't have them walking by listening to Pheobe screaming around a track!

Beautiful job!

good times, on the video it looks like a fun track. Even with all the BMW backmarkers, how frustrating it must of been following (briefly) drivers that never hit an apex!
One day at the track does help justify a winter's work!

Chris,

Awesome video and sound. Congrats on a job well done!

Now, about your "BMW yahoos" comment ... I'll assume present company is excluded, as my M3 has never been to the track.

I saw an M3 at VIR this past weekend sporting a sticker that said "Apex? What apex?" Is this what you're talking about?

What was the final solution to your earlier posts about "carb bogging" and adjustments of the electromotive set up? Glad it all worked out for you.

Ahhh...

Well the bogging almost completely went away once I installed the unrestricted race exhaust. WIth lots of overlap in the cam and bigger carb venturis I needed the scavenging effect of the exhaust to prevent "stalling" of the airflow when I hit the gas. Could be a bit better yet, but it's nearly gone...

My failing alternator regulator was most likely causing them problems with the e-motive. The advance curve isn't really dialed in right now and I have it somewhat retarted to prevent detonation and will slowly work on this with someone who knows the system.

The car runs strong and showed somewhere in the neighborhood of 240-260 HP on the DL-90... No good consistent reading on the track yet...

Chris;
Based on your initial settings, do you have a sense the rev's for the torque peak and the HP peak?

Here is the DL-90 graph from most of a lap. I think I have some refining of the car model to do because the numbers are a bit "optimistic" I think they are because the clutch action during gear changes...

Hang on, let me post a few better ones...

Okay so here's two useful graphs... I think I'll need to work with the cams a bit..

The first shows the peak power vs. RPM. It appears that there is more in there.... I had the rev limit set to about 6400 RPM since it was a new motor...

THis one shows a fairly flat torque curve from 5300RPM on up... 4th gear pulls like a scalded cat...
