I'm thinking

of installing side markers on my US '88 911.
Has anybody done this? I have seen some specs as far as placement goes, but can't seem to find them at present.
What do you guys think? A nice add on or what?

I installed them (teardrop style, not the rectangular ones) on our '86 hotrod Targa. I like them alot.

Euro side markers

I've wanted to do this for years for both visibility/safety and cool factor.

My mechanic told me to step away from the car

I did it on my car, for the same reasons as you mention (especially the visibility). The install is not too difficult; the wiring is already in place nearby under the A-pillar, and you just need to purchase lights/fixtures, which are pretty cheap, as well as short jumper harnesses, PN 911-612-177-02 (which are also not expensive). The "pucker moment" is drilling the holes in the car body. If you search, there are a couple of threads which show the exact position and sizes of the holes. Again, I am a big fan of the added visibility they afford.

My SC has had them retrospectively installed. I like them. I feel it makes me more visible at intersections.

Besides having them as running lights, With a bit of creative wiring, you can have them flash with, or contra too, your turn signals. Did this with my 914 after my signal for a left turn was not seen by the driver at the intersection to my left thought I would just go through the intersection and decided to pull out. He hit the brakes and just missed me.

I added a flashing rear LED third brake light too just to get peoples attention too.

Always liked the look on the euro cars.

I did not think they were running lights. I always thought they were just blinkers for turning. Iremember reading years ago that someone hooked them up as running lights and melted the lense.

Yes, I recall a thread on that also. I have mine set up as blinkers only (when you hook into the existing wiring, they are bikers only, so trying to do more would be much more work).

If you use an LED bulb there is no heat issue. Mine are not LEDs and are on whenever the lights are and I have yet to have any issues.

Correct, they're flasher repeaters, not side markers.

If you were closer, you'd be welcome to swing by and take measurements of my fenders. My 79 is a ROW car that appears to have been delivered with them stock. The housings are in my basement on a shelf, so the holes are very easy to get to. I have no plans to run them.
If you tell me exactly what measurements you want, I can get out there Thursday or Friday and get them.
