What is this piece?

Forgive me for any stupid questions but I am not real familiar with the air cooled Porsche engine just yet. This was my Dad's car that I inherited from him and I fully intend to keep it, maintain it, and love it but i need some help. I can wrench fairly well but I am not certain as to what parts are. I am told this car has a 3.4L engine and I have receipts that say so but I believe it is actually a 3.2 that was bored to a 3.4

I am going to change the plugs, wires, and cap and rotor this weekend and to ge tot eh left side plugs I have to remove this piece.

What is it and does it simply unbolt and come out?

If you simply remove that blower without completing the rest of the "backdate" you will lose all (most?) heat and defrost.

That blue box on your AC stand is something you should research further. It's a Jacobs Electronics "Omni Pak" aftermarket ignition system. Very odd to see on a 3.2 as the ignition system is controlled by the DME computer under drivers seat.

If your having running issues (think you mentioned you were) I'd revert all the ignition system back to stock as a first start. The 3.2 stock ignition is quite robust and works well.

I started to comment on this too. I haven't seen one of those Jacobs boxes since my fox body mustang days in the mid to late 80's.

I dont think the car is stock. I have a packet of receipts totaling over $20k and it shows that the engine was upgraded to a 3.4L with Carrera Racing cams, turbo high volume oil pump, stainless steel exhaust, modified fuel enrichment chip, dilivar head studs, 2 timing chains.

Or at least that what the receipts say. Im kind of working in the blind here because my Dad didnt really tell me too much about the car prior to his passing.

If the rear heater fan is not working, absent, the front two fans won't work. I am sure there is a work around for that, just never tried it. Bob

Wow. There is a lot going on with that engine just from the pic. Hot air socket duct replaced with flexible hose, painted / powder coated intake manifold, Jacobs ignition box, what appears to be a K&N air filter element in the airbox, etc.

Was the 3.4 build done locally? Has the vehicle passed CA emissions?

You might consider having one of the local air cooled specialists giving the car a once over as a launch pad for your intended ownership / maintenance / love affair. Mirage International (my '87 is currently there undergoing a 3.4 build) or Black Forest Automotive are two great options.

I'd love to see the car (I'm in Encinitas / Carlsbad and, pre Coronapocalypse, normally go to Rancho Santa Fe Cars & Coffee), perhaps someday.

You may want to reach out to the shop that did the engine work and see of they can fill you in on the details of what was done.

If not, take them to a local garage of your choice and have them review the receipts and inspect the car. Hopefully they can tell you what you have an how to proceed.

While many here are staunch DIY types, I belong to the school that having a partnership with a trusted mechanic is a better way to go.

The car is being looked at right now at ******** Stebel in El Cajon. It near my house, had good references, works on air cooled Porsches and I was hoping to start a relationship with a local shop.
