Bilstein- Green or Yellow ?
Think I'm going to replace the rear shocks on my '87 Cab. I have an occasional bang and don't know where it's coming from. They otherwise do seem fine but I also don't know when they were last replaced.
Currently I have the yellow Sports but wondering if I should go a bit softer with the greens. Any thoughts for a cab ? Also, when you purchase a pair, does the large rubber washer that sits under the large metal washer come with them ?

I'm assuming you hear the occasion bang from the rear? Check to make sure your swaybars aren't loose.

I had that problem and found the sway bar link rubber bushing separated from the link. The link would occasionally hit the ground making a bang sound.

Check the inserts to make sure they aren't loose. I have the same issue and sound horrible. Turned out one of the the locking nuts the inserts are held in was loose and the insert would move under the right conditions making a popping or banging sound.

Thanks but the sway bar bushings are new and in place. Not sure what you mean by locking nut other than the main top bolt, which all appears to be tight. This is the rear so no inserts.
Anyone have experience with the difference between green and yellow ?

I put Bilstein greens on all 4 corners of my '87 cab - I was afraid the yellows might be too stiff for a cab. Happy with the result. Wouldn't want to go any firmer for the roads around here. Since you've had the yellows you are in a better position to judge if they were giving you too rough of a ride - if 'yes' go green, if 'no' stick with yellows.
Other options would be: 1. Go Yellow / Green combo as some have recommended on other shock threads. 2. Keep the Yellow's you have and have them rebuilt with digressive/optimized valving - lots of threads here on that. But if you decide to go for simple and not too harsh - the greens do nicely. |

My 84 911 came with green Bilsteins from the factory. They were fine for street use.
I personally like a firmer ride, so I upgraded the torsion bars to 22/29 MM and i installed the yellow "sport" Bilsteins on the front/rear. I was very pleased with the results and the firmer ride that combination gave me. Some guys here have installed a combination of yellows and greens and like that set up. I think they put yellows in the rear and greens up front. You might check around in your area and see if someone has a 3.2 Carrera with yellow Bilsteins. See if you can get a test ride. I personally don't think just changing the shocks/struts from green to yellow will make a significant difference in your ride quality. Plus, I feel that in Cabs or Targas stiffness is not a bad thing...YMMV.

Thanks. I have green up front, which are fine and yellow in rear. Overall, the ride is fine - not too firm. I think I'll just replace the rear with another set of yellows
