Early rear view mirror mounting - backdate

Good morning Pelican's

I want to back date my interior rearview mirror. Does anyone have a photo of where the screws go in the roof structure? PET claims the screws are M5 but I could not get an M5-.8 machine screw to go through the mounting boss.

Don’t you need to graft in a piece from an old SWB?

Sub'd as I wanna do this too. Thought I would just weld in my own mount to the roof. Much cleaner look.

I installed an early pedestal mirror on my 72...easy enough...drilled the 3 holes in the triangular pattern to match the pedestal mount, installed RIV-NUTS (not sure if I used 4 or 5 mm) and done. I did this while the headliner was out to it was easy to see (although you can feel) the width of the horizontal raised/hollow sheet metal section that runs across the top of the windshield area. When I hear 'back date', I don't know what year you have, but I would think for structural reasons you would have the same feature to mount the mirror.

I have a 74

Nice looking mirror Harpo. What year is that out of? Thought most of them were chrome...

I have my 77 headliner out right now, I agree with '73pcar' who stated above to drill the three holes, insert rivnuts and it should mount up.

The same 'bar' that runs across the roofline that holds the visor clips in should have enough room to mount the mirror.

Most likely you would want the headliner out to do this mod. If you want to trade, I have two midyear mirrors / glass mount I would trade for what you've shown if you are having second thoughts.

That's a SWB mirror that's been painted black.

Yes, I painted my SWB chrome mirror. I found some M5 riv nuts at work that require a 7mm hole. I don't want to pull my headliner because that means that the windshield is also coming out.

Update - these Riv nuts are installed backwards

Great job...looks just like what I did...love the pedestal look

Well I'm a dumb ass and installed the mirror base backwards. This is much better.
